A beautiful debut work by a young author of Australian Aboriginal heritage, Swallow the Air tells the story of a young Aboriginal woman, May, trying to find her way in the world. It's a journey that takes her across Australia but also an inward journey as she tries to come to terms with her identity. The author's poetic style is evocative but not overdone. The story unfolds with little snapshots of May and her family's lives that tell us a lot about the continuing oppression faced by indigenous people.
