I once told my wife that I wished that there was a book that pretty much explained WWII. The people, politics, numbers, maps, the whole deal all in one place. I found it in this book. Great author, great book.

Churchill displays a masterful command of the key events leading to the outbreak of WW2. His analysis is razor sharp and he displays it in a crystal clear manner. This is grand strategy at its best!

It took a long time to read this book. Mostly due to it's length and the way it is written (British English). Compared to the six volumes of Churchill's memoirs, this book present the reader with key points instead of a lot of drawn out detail. This book also presents the reader with an alternative view of the British involvement in WWII. It also gives a good account of the events and circumstances leading up to WWII and as brief account of what happened toward the end of the war to bring us into the Cold War. Highly recommended if you wish to read about one of WWII's greatest leaders.

Very well written. To read about the events, train of thoughts and behind- the-scenes diplomacy from this top drawer statesman makes this book a must read. Astonishing memory he had as well.

Fascinating read, great perspective into Churchill's views of broad expansion of executive power during war/crisis. An absolute must-read. However, take it with a grain of salt as it is an extremely self-aggrandizing pen!

Quite an amazing insight into the war from a non-American perspective. It was slow to read, but incredibly interesting from page 1.

I recommend this to anyone interested in World War II history.

Sir Winston was not only a great statesman, but also a prolific author. His voluminous account on the Second World War (and the events leading up to it) as seen through the eyes of a key player in the events, is a must for anyone wishing to learn a bit of history, as well as about the consequences of human decisions and actions. There is a great deal to ponder about also in the light of our own present day world affairs.
