Amazing. I read this several times. Waaaaayyyy better than the movie, which pissed me off. One of my favorite stories about aliens, another one being Tommyknockers. King once again proves that he can twist sci-fi and make it an amazing character-driven story. How often does a sci-fi novel make you really sad when characters die? I really cared about these guys.

There is a considerable hump to get over before things get interesting, but it's worth it. If you reread it, it's easier to see how things tie together.

I wasn't expecting much from this book, mostly since I thought King's last "alien" effort was sub-par (Tommyknockers). This was better than expected, but not on par with his better works.

I'm sorry to say that I saw the movie first. And, after reading aforementioned book, I felt like going straight to Hollywood and shaking the movie producers who made the movie. This wasn't King's best, but it was fast-paced, and I ate it up in a week (a feat very rare for me back then). I loved the whole idea of one of the main characters thoughts being like that of a large storage facility with cabinets. To this day, I sometimes picture my memories as so.
If ONLY they made the movie more like the book -- it would probably be a less mainstream movie with its less Hollywood-style plot -- then maybe, just maybe, it would not have tanked at the box office.

Not as compelling as some of Stephen King's work but entertaining as usual. Does a good job of pulling you through the story and offers a couple of interesting concepts.

Perhaps some will only see the movie and decide not to read the book.

Which is a shame, this book is a lot better than the movie although that isn't too hard.

It is though, it's again proof that King's words, expressions, ideas and characters are not easily transferred to the television.

A group of friends go on a hike and encounter an alien invasion. It's a mixture of ideas and characters from a lot of his other books, but at least in the book it doesn't really matter. There's suspense and it doesn't turn into a laughing matter.

Ree-damn-diculous. Aliens bursting from butts. Frothing military maniacs. A Magic Retard (Stephen King's go-to character when the Magic Negro is busy). Ludicrous, labored faux-blue-collar dialogue. And farts. Constant, neverending, rancid, moist farts. This may be the stoopidest book King has ever written, and that's saying something. And yet ... I kept thinking he was doing it on purpose, that he wrote this as a horror comedy, a la "Slither." King has written some godawful garbage in his career, but none of it was near this entertaining. "Dreamcatcher" is bad, but it's hilariously bad. This is a book in which bacon saves the planet (OK, that's not such a stretch). I spent my train commutes to work and back quaking with laughter while reading this. It's FUN! "Insomnia" wasn't fun. It just sucked. "Desperation" just sucked. "Dreamcatcher" is a different beastie altogether: “You could only compare it to farts because there was nothing else even close.” Thank you, Stephen King, thank you for showing those National Book Award snobs the way. I can't, in good conscience, give this any more than three stars. It's a wretched novel, and King should be ashamed of himself for writing it. As ashamed as I am for enjoying it.

Mr. King needs to learn to present his ideas in much tighter prose. This book rambles on and on and on and on and...do you get it? that was how it felt reading through this verbal diarhhea.

I demand that he compensate me for the precious time I wasted on this drivel. I'll never read anything new from him again - he's just coasting after some initial brilliant works ("The Shining", "Misery", anyone?)

I like this book for three reasons:

1) the hero of the story is the retarded kid; without his special powers, none of the other friends would be able to defeat their common foe, which is otherworldly.

2) the phrase, "no bounce, no play", which is never explained, but it is about boobies.;)

3) basically, this story is about friendship and how it conquers a funky alien fungus invasion.
gives depth to what the movie presents

Many have read this book and have given it poor reviews .I guess as an avid Stephen King reader .I went beyond the book when reading it and to where he was at this time in his life. As this book was written while recuperating from his car accident, and having Jonesy experience an automobile accident similar to what he had gone through .I felt that he was letting the readers know the struggles that he had faced after the accident .

â€œDreamcatcher” is an outstanding horror SF novel, and undoubtedly one of Stephen King’s best works.
The plot revolves around a few best friends with “supernatural” powers, a crashed UFO, a deadly alien parasite named after Ripley (the main character form Alien), and top secret “clean-up-the-place” missions by the US government.
Not only is the book unpredictable and with a lot of twists, but the story is brilliantly depicted by Stephen King, and is bound to give you chills up your spine.
In addition, the book comprises brilliant humor, issues and criticisms toward the US policies, and the benefits of being American.

I found this book a little heavy going for Stephen King. I liked the way the disease spread, but couldn't really follow who or what Mr Gray was. I need to watch the movie now.

The usual fair with King lately, slightly unoriginal story, fairly well written but left me feeling that it was a pointless read.

 Dream catcher By Stephen King

Overall Rating: Dreamcatcher is when this man’s talent shined.

Stephen King is one of the most over rated authors of our time, I have read some of his works like Tommyknockers, Eyes Of The Dragon, Firstater, The Dark Tower Series and they (for me) ranged from mediocre to bad, well for the most part bad that’s something I could write a essay about all on it’s own. Then I picked up the book called Dreamcatcher and I expected the same sort of stuff I’ve read before. A somewhat scattered brained plot, unrealistic deaths and the suspense that seems to rather bore than scare. Yet when I read this book it was so weird. Here I am a person who typically doesn’t like Stephen King’s work, absolutely loving what I was reading. And I think when he wrote this book, he didn’t have just a spark that grew into a few ideas. He had spark that grew into a wildfire of ideas.

Dreamcatcher (or originally called “Cancer) is a alien invasion story, yet is one of the most original I have ever witnessed. The book focuses on these four friends who have somewhat telepathic powers. They go on a hunting trip. Miles away from their cabin a alien ship crash lands bringing what is called a Riply virus to earth infecting wildlife and people in the area. As the four try to survive though, they find that why this is happening and their powers may be linked. They may in fact have these abilities to stop the invasion but didn’t know it until now.

The story also jumps back and forth from the past to the present showing how they saved a handi capped boy and how strangely he gave them these gifts in return.

Not only that, beyond the alien infection, there is a crazy general who quarantine the area and just crazy enough to kill every town infected or not. So that’s always good.

Before I read the book I(personally) knew some Stephen King die hard fans said “It’s stupid.” “Dumb” “Didn’t make any Sense.” Well they must of read the book with no thought process at all. Every bit of the book had a meaning. (Except for when Stephen King keeps using the ‘I am a Walrus’ lyrics just fill up a couple pages I think) You learn more as you read. You piece together as you read it and go “Oh that’s why” It is very layered and the major plot and subplot lines do sometimes go beyond the text.

So the good. Well this is a word I don’t use a lot here. it’s a intelligent book. Stephen King was genius when he wrote this one. It has heart. A lot of it did because it’s drama between friends in a impossible situation. It has a lot of stuff going on too that blends to together nicely. I mean it was thought. Out. It’s not one of those books where the author threw the ideas in a blender before spilling them onto the page.

The bad. Well this didn’t bother me any but it might bother Stephen King fans. It’s not scary. I know I say that with all books. But I mean if your looking for a book that Stephen is trying to scare you with. This is not it. It is a scifi thriller more than anything else.

But I recommend this to everyone, even if your not a Stephen King fan. Every one should get a chance to read this book.

Four smoothies out of four.
