You must read it. You will not regret it. I think C.S. gives an excellent and plausible account of the underlying philosophy responsible for the fall of the human race. This tale goes beyond the ominous 1984, and lays down a story which I think every modern American can grasp and relate to.

I will be honest, some might find this book a bit odd, but it explains almost every theory C.S. Lewis wrote about in a single novel. The first two books in the series are good, but not necessary to read before That Hideous Strength. If you are not in the mood for a novel, but you still would like the philosophical and theological theories laid out by Lewis, read Abolition of Man. If you are in the mood for a science fiction novel about the power of the objective moral law and God, than take a stab at the novel.

Mind-boggling! A prophetic freak out of a book! One of the handful of fiction novels that successfully intertwines an amazing philosophy as it's subtext!

Particularly relevant for today. Kind of along the lines of "Brave New World" as in the events taking place allowing Brave New World's world to exist!!
Lewis has soothed so many of my conscious and unconscious anxieties about God. For years I have been troubled by the question, "how should an honorable Christian act when it is no longer safe or desirable to admit one's faith?" Or the other question that currently plagues me now, "why is evil and good no longer objective?" It is troubling to recognize oneself as intelligent, morally thoughtful, and wanting to be God fearing in a society where people put God on the same level as a belief in Santa Claus. Maybe that's my pride but it also makes me very frightened and troubled. "That Hideous Strength" was a God sent salve. Thank you again, Jack Lewis! I can't wait to meet you one day.

This is more a comment on the book rather than a review, seeing as how I didn't finish reading it.

I arrived at page 171 after a month of picking this book up and putting it down and I decided I could go no further. I just didn't enjoy reading this as much as I did the other 2 books of the trilogy or other C.S. Lewis books.

The other space trilogy books definitely had strong theology and Redemptive messages needed into the story, but this book seemed to have a weak story line and then abrupt interruptions of small sermons by Lewis. Rather than the story being itself a message, Lewis injected messages into the story where they didn't seem to fit.

This book had a different tone than the other 2 of the trilogy as well. This book much more of a mystery/suspense novel whereas the first 2 in the trilogy were more sci-fi with amazing description of Lewis' imagining what life on other worlds could be.

While this book did tell a good story, it just didn't catch my interest. My recent C.S. Lewis fiction favorite recently is "Til We Have Faces".
