Excellent book. Her writing is as good as her Meet The Press appearances. This book gives an insightful look into the politics behind the scenes of the Lincoln Administration and the process by which a war caused by slavery, but initially explicitly fought to purely defend the Union, became a war to end slavery and create a stronger Union.

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't what I expected. I anticipated a look at Lincoln's frame of thought and philosophical insight, but I didn't really get that. What was presented were the surrounding political dilemmas and stresses that presented themselves.

It is interesting to contrast Lincoln's leadership style with the types of people he liked to hire to lead. Lincoln was a ditherer who waited for events to unfold. He wanted, though, administrators and generals who were men of action who didn't hesitate to move forward.
This is one of those books I love reading but until I am on vacation have very little chance of finishing due to its length and the speed with which I read. Goodwin is a very good story teller.
It is interesting to contrast Lincoln's leadership style with the people he hired as leaders. He was a ditherer who waited for events to unfold. He wanted Generals and administrators who were men of action who were for the most part moving forward with a certain sense of urgency.
