Didn't realize I liked this book until I was trying to tell someone how much I didn't like this book. As I explained what was happening, it actually dawned on me while I was speaking, that hey, I think I do like this book. Its a pretty short book and maybe makes you think about how all the money in the world can't help you if you don't go after your real dreams and real loves.

The Great Gatsby is no doubt a tragic tale of unrequited love that ultimately leads to the destruction of a man otherwise perceived as impervious to life struggles due to his immense wealth. The novel takes place during the 1920's in the United States, a time where the uncertainty brought upon by financial turmoil had led many to indulge in vast alcohol consumption and debauchery. Here Gastby attempts to win the love of a former girlfriend while she is married, and is unable to cope with the failure he is ultimately confronted with.

"The Great Gatsby" has been praised until death by virtually all critics - and it deserves every word of it. This is a novel that speaks of craftsmanship, passion and emotion, and remains one of only a rare few books to leave me almost unable to speak for a good long while afterwards.

I like Fitzgerald's description of the lived experience of time--Gatsby is "borne back ceaseless into the past" by the power of his memories of Daisy. He's stuck at that moment in his life. I think there is a genuine insight here. Peering ahead to understand ourselves and the possibilities for our lives we are swept back to the great moments and loves of our lives.

After reading "The Great Gatsby" I looked forward to watching the film. While watching the film I compared it to the book and felt that it was a false representation of Fitzgerald's classic. Some of the actors/actresses chosen did not portray the characters in the novel (ie Myrtle and Tom). Mia Farrow did a great job and fit Daisy perfectly. But I felt that the film did not touch at all upon many of Fitzgerald's themes which are very apparent throughout the novel. Coppola transformed the story into mainly a love story between Jay and Daisy...including adding scenes that were not at all in the novel! I also did not feel with any of the characters, they did not come alive and the movie had absolutely no effect on me. But the costumes and setting were true to the novel....

This must be the third time I have read this book - definititely a favourite. What a wonderful story of excess, love, lost hope and a lost generation! Tom of course drove me mad, Daisy too really. Very well crafted, can't wait to discuss it!
I read this many years ago, at school or uni? Loved it then. Now enjoying it even more. It takes a little while to get used to the language, but the descriptions are crisp, the characters vivid. I'm amazed by the lives they live - it promises to be an interesting observation of the human situation!

It had been a while since I read a "classic" and was inspired by a conversation with a friend and the Broadway production "Gatz" which I read about in the NYT to pick this one up. It is an amazingly written novel and a quick read - highly encourage you to put this one on your list. What a haunting last line! "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

Just reread this recently. It's so beautiful and wrenching. I've never understood why they give this book to high school kids. They're too young to grasp dashed hopes. Though the book does move into social class issues which virtually nobody wants to discuss out loud these days. High school kids are probably more aware of class distinctions that adults of any age want to admit.

I love this book. Fitzgerald has one of my all-time favorite writing styles. He is lyrical and poetic in his writing. He literally paints pictures with words and I admire and adore that about him. Granted there is no real lesson to take away from this book, but it's just a really great story. It's a little thick at first and takes some pushing through at the beginning, but after a while, his style becomes easy to read and enslaving. If you weren't required to read it in high school, you should really read it. It's well worth it.

Screw the symbolism. Read this for the beauty of the language Fitzgerald used. No one has a better grasp on english than F. Scott, and his story of a man who has everything except what he really needs is possibly the best-written work I've ever enjoyed. A good story can save crap writing, and good writing can save a crap story, but rarely do you get good writing and a good story. It's too bad that High School english classes have ruined it for so many people--wait until you're in your 30s (at least) and give it a second chance--you won't be sorry.

My favorite book in the history of the written word. Jay Gatsby is so spectacular in his lifestyle, which I attribute to his rags-to-riches upbringing. He knows that it can all go away very quickly, and he enjoys and savors his moments. Daisy is such a stuck-up ... piece of work. The thought that anything could put a dagger in her life is utterly impossible, and she relies on EVERY SINGLE MAN in her life to make her life exactly the way she wants it.
My favorite book of all time. This is the one I can read every year, and I even like the movie.

This was the first book I read in English. I keep a fond memory of it all of some sentences in particular. The one sentence I still know almost by heat (I did check it) is this one: "It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced-or seemed to face-the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.

Glamour, glitter, cocktails and corruption, along with all the gleaming ephemera of 1920s New York City, are the dust flung into the eyes of Nick Carraway, whose only inheritance is to be one of the few honest men he has ever known. When Nick enters the carefree – and careless -- lives of his fellow transplanted westerners, Tom and Daisy Buchanan and the mysterious Jay Gatsby, the chemistry of their passions reveals just how compromised an honest man can be. Fitzgerald’s masterwork, written at age 27, is a poetic and analysis of how love fares in the American crucible of privilege and power.

Yet another required read from high school that is so much more appreciated the second time around. Teens see a failed love story, adults see the inevitable collision course of a lifestyle of greed and carelessness.
"...they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made...."

Maybe I would've liked the people in this book--ANY of the people--if they'd HAD ANOTHER DRINK. Oh wait, they drank it all. I never read this in high school but pretty much everyone in this thing isn't worthy of having at your dinner table, and for god's sake don't let them near the liquor cabinet. Mind you, if that was the point, then I should've rated it higher.

Not often do authors write novels where all the characters are deplorable yet still have the reader identifying with them and wanting more. Even the narrator, though watching from a distance, says nothing, does nothing to improve the attitudes and behaviours of those around him. He is enticed by the world of the rich and beautiful, though morally deficient and almost brainless their beauty gathers people around them, tempting them and allowing them the liberty to behave little better than a selfish 5 year old.

Even though it was a nice read, it fell quite below my expectations. The relationship between Jay and Nick has been brilliantly etched. The last chapter is gripping and well executed.

My favorite line from the book is "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one....just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you have had."

This book is wasted on high school students. Read it again as an adult. You'll thank me. The story is tragic. The characters are completely flawed. But the writing! It is beautiful and exquisite.

While The Great Gatsby gets a pretty bad name, most call it boring and drawn out. And many question it's status as a"romantic" novel, I have to disagree on many accounts. While ultimately we know that something terrible has to happen to our main character Jay Gatsby, the way that Nick tells the story is actually quite wonderful. And not a romance novel, really, sure none of the romances really end well, but when did that ever stop romance. The way Gatsby loves Daisy, is really what all little girls, "little fools" wish to be love.

Fitzgerald delivers a powerful punch in this masterpiece, one of the greatest works of American literature. Five shattered dreams out of five.
