I loved this book! The plot was really interesting, and full of drama and suspense, in the fact that I never could really guess what would happen next. Fitzgerald's amazing lyricism really made the book unique.

It was also an interesting look into life in the 20's, and how superficial the whole decade was, up until the Depression.

I loved Gatsby too... poor guy.

And the book was nice and short, but faced-paced and is also complex enough that it's a very satisfying work that makes you think.

Read this first in high school. Loved it then. Second time around, much older. There's a reason it's a classic. Nick.

There is this amazing passage in the book it goes something like this...He nknew that when he kissed this girl his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited listening for a moment longer to a tuning fork that had set upon the universe. And then he kissed her. At his lips touch her mouth opened like the bloom of a flower...something like that. great writing, good story about how love can consume you. When I think about love, I remeber Gatsby and Daisy and how it wasn't enough for her to love him, she had to never have loved an another. So sad, my favorite:)

I do not understand the popularity of this book. It may capture the glitz and glamour of the jazz age, not too far removed from the hollywood lifestyle of today, but it's also painfully inadequate in characterization, and most definitely plot. Nothing happens at all until the last chapter or so. Simply tedious. Dreadful.

Not at all what I thought it was about. An amazingly twisted plot. Ahh, to have been at one of those fabulous Long Island parties in the 20's!

Is it possible to read this book too many times? Gatsby is but one Fitzgerald tale of woe, but given the fascinating life of Mr. Fitzgerald himself, it is likely one of the most autobiographical. Readers of all stripes will discover an ensemble of characters whose individual motivations are revealed with skillful prose. Fitzgerald was a master at parables, particularly those that intersect love and personal fortune (or misfortune). One will find plenty of contemporary relevance within the narrative of The Great Gatsby. I hope this still holds a place on academic reading lists.

Fantastic book! Fitzgerald creates such memorable characters, then pries away their facades to reveal their truth. Love his writing :)

One of my top ten favorite books. It is packed full of artistry and symbolism and never seems to get old. A difficult book to start to read, but almost impossible to put down.

All the characters are diverse and difficult to pin down, yet seem familiar at the same time.

Every sentence seems to have a meaning, and with only being 180 plus pages, reads like a machine gun being fired to your brain.

A must read for everyone.

Who hasn't read this book? Probably the most read book by an American author. Just read it, even if you don't want to. It's a classic and whether it's the best story or not is a varied opinion but it's a good book to have within your knowledge. A lot of history behind the novel. It was an easy read and over all an enjoyable one. It is said to be Fitzgerald's best work which personally I disagree with but read it and make your own assumptions.

One of my favorite things about this book is the textual criticism at the end by Matthew Bruccoli. I find this type of stuff fascinating. Subconsciously, I felt like I knew all these things were going on in the text, but I didn't stop to think about them; and he nailed everything. I especially like his quote, "Punctuation is not decoration: a few commas more or less do not matter much in a novel, but more than a thousand punctuation interferences alter the overall rhythm of the prose---a serious matter in reading a stylist whose sense for the sound and movement of the American language has been compared to perfect pitch."

Every one I knew read this book, accept me. It was not what I expected. Everyone that read it just said they liked it, but not what the book is actually about. Now I wonder if they actually read it, because they should have said more.... like it was a little naughty, or a statement about the rich, or something more. This was a good book and had a lot to say.

An account of the 1920s in the booming America, Fitzgerald immobilizes the rich and tracks their lives, telling of their tales involving treachery, cheating, lies and the flanderizing of money- never seeming to be content. Gatsby, a rich man who never seems to be happy but knows what true love and money are, is the only person in the novel to understand the real way of life. When his life comes to a tragic end, it emphasizes the need for people that care about others and who will not lose track of themselves.

This book seems to be even more relevant to me now. If the great idea of this book is the american dream and all of the bull shit that goes with it, then one of the minor themes is the reverse migration of several of the minor characters (gatsby, nick and daisy) that come from the midwest and end up in NY.

Fitzgerald wasn't only writing in the "Jazz Age" but he was also part of the literature that's dictated the return of the pioneers to the economic center of the country. Thematically this novel is amazing. Especially if you read not only Fitzgerald's other novels but also the rest of the novels published in this time period. The other great American novel of this period, Faulkner's "The Sound and The Fury" doesn't hold up to "Gatsby" in terms of accessibility.

Quite possibly my favorite book, I love the story of one man's chase of American dream. Many critics argue that this is the epitome of the great American novel, and I may have to agree. The portrayal of Jay Gastby and his life during the 1920s is riveting and captivating. Every time I re-read this book, I find something new to think about. I loved teaching this to my English 11 students when I was student teaching!

In the words of my cousin Anne: a "literary work of misery".... pretty much sums up how I feel about this book. This is the only book I've ever read that made me want to kill myself rather than finish reading it, and also the only the book where the movie is better than the book.

*sigh* .....of all the great works to choose from to read for your final year in high school English - this is what they came up with for my year???
This is the most boring book I have ever read. It was a test in endurance - the only reason I finished it was because it was part of the core curriculum.

The book explores unrequited love but told through the eyes of a son of a solid middle-class family. He sees the upper class prejudice and snobbery as well as the lower class desperation for upward mobility. Everyone is a victim of their own circumstances. Gatsby would be a man much admired in this day and age, which may speak to how far we've come since the days when class barriers were a recurring theme in many 19th and 20th century novels. Good reading.

Without this book, you just wont understand the DEPTHS of "American Psycho" or most stories about the "white" culture of the early 20th century. Fitzgerald's description of a scene should be studied by today's rappers in Hip Hop. Their lyrics would become more bearable to digest.

it's a sad tragedy .. gatsby was trying to alter his life due to poverty , and the ignorance of rich ppl , that was awful inaddition he thought that time can be fixed and his old love can return back , but the tragedy occured when gatsby was killed erroneously though it was not his fault, and we can see that when he was alive hundreds of unknown ppl were entering his parties however when he died no body even came to his funeral except nick carraway who was the narrator of the story he knew the truth of each character ...

I personally would never have picked this book had it not been assigned to me in English class. However, as I read it, I quickly grew fond of it and particularly its protagonist, Jay Gatsby. I probably didn't grasp everything regarding the 1920s and all the subtleties Fitzgerald slipped into the narrative, but I found the development of the characters truly mesmerizing. It's become one of my favourite books; I'm glad I was assigned this read, and sorry I never picked up before.
Gatsby is a character that can be easily realted to, with his innocence and will to follow his dreams--plain, childish naivety, but at the same time, doomed. He's a beautiful literary figure, Gatsby.

There's something special about reading good books that every time I finish reading them I'm always craving to read more from the same author or topic. I came across with this book while reading the Double Bind; I was so intrigued with Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan that I had to stop reading DB and read the Great Gatsby. Now I as foreigner and obviously with English as my second language knew about this book as one of the greatest american novels but never made the time to read it. Wow, I am so glad I read it, this novel embodies what an american dream is all about with everything it implies. Now I understand why it is a classic.

Enjoyed the insight into the 'rich' life of post Great War America. However I found the plot a little oddly paced and struggled to relate to the shocking events concluding this classic novel.
