After reading this book I had to visit the Bitterroot Valley in Montana. Burke's descriptions did it justice! It was nice to read a Burke book that didn't have that dark brooding aspect that all his Dave Robicheaux books have. Of course, there was still plenty of crime and violence but the black cloud that seems to hang over Robicheaux wasn't there.

I love JLB's writing. That being said, I'm just not that fond of his "Billy Bob Thorton" character. I tried- read all three consecutively- but they're just not as well done as the Robicheaux's, or for that matter his latest with Hackberry Holland, "The Valley of the Rain Gods". Oh well. Maybe he'll write a few more of those and let Billy Bob languish away in silence in Missoula...

I listened to this novel as a book on tape. It was superbly done with the accents, and was enjoyable. The pace was more relaxed than most who done its are but the universal themes of good guy , bad guy , damsel and violence were all there

Good murder mystery. There is a lot of truth about Montana in this book. Unfortunately it is not all good.

I guess I've been spoiled by Koontz and Kellerman. It had a few funny moments, but hardly any suspense, considering that there was a lot of potential to do so. The story is set in Colorado - maybe they do things differently there. Too slow for me.

Set in Missoula, MT amongst the white supremacists and trigger-happy vigilantes.

Wyatt Dixon is an unforgettable villian, best absorbed in book on tape so the accents of these characters come alive

"...I knew I would dream about dead people that night and the collective insanity that caused human beings to kill one another to justify their deeds under every flag and banner and religious crusade imaginable... I've always suspected the truth of the human story is to be found more often in the footnotes than in the text." Again, this particular series offers amazing Montana landscapes, stark analysis of man's darker and more violent side, and beautiful descriptions of not-so-beautiful humanity: "His shirt was unbuttoned to the navel under his slicker, and I could smell the dampness on his body, like the odor of drainwater welling out of an iron grate." Or "I took his hand. It was as rough as a rooster's leg, scaled along the edges, the lines in his palms seamed with dirt." I like Mr. Burke's writing style and his way of addressing the awful situations you see on the true crime shows. His attempts to show the experiences and circumstances that create violent personalities are always worth reading.
