Surprisingly good -- the first half is too slow, summary-prone and dotted with hokey writing, but it's completely riveting from the second half on, and then you realize what the first half was for.

Creepy but fun. I almost cried at this one too. Poor baby.
the second stephen king novel I've read (I also read the Green Mile, and I've read TONS of his short stories.) it scared me, not as much as his short stories usually do, but it also made me sad and even made me laugh at times. wonderfully complex and haunting, like all of his work.
An excellent and very scary novel. I laughed, cried, and shivered with suspense and terror. The movie was very good too, except they left out the Indian legend.

This is by far, without a doubt, the scariest book I have ever managed to read. What is said on that back cover - "The Most Frightening Book Ever Yet" - is certainly true.

Facebook reviewed the book incorrectly though. It wasn't the little boy's (Gage) cat. It was his sister's.

I wonder how much scarier the plot would have been if Gage directly got killed in the book. The fact that King goes back in forth in time from Gage's happy existence to his 3-foot long coffin at a funeral is unique. Hell, the fact that a child was killed (brutally) is scary as hell as it is! I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Stephen King.

I think this is my favorite book all time. This book scares the HELL out of me every time I read it. I love the characters, (...especially Jud) and the villains in this book are nothing short of terrifying. The Wendigo, Gage, Zelda, the Batterman kid..*shudders* The backdrop for the story is great too, although being from Nova Scotia its not very difficult for me to picture the setting. Maybe that's why I find it so scary. Hell, the Pet Sematary could be in any one of my friends back yards. heh. It's a quick read, about 300 pages methinks. Read it! In fact go and buy a copy right now. You won't be disappointed.

This book is advertised as Stephen King's "scariest book yet". Well, either he has stepped his game up or his entire collection of books have a small chance of scaring someone over the age of 10. Uneventful, slow to begin, and a disappointing climax.

For a while I thought this novel was pretty humdrum, not necessarily mediocre but somewhat lackluster. However, I then reached a part pretty near the end, just before all hell broke loose, and I became instantly absorbed—I no longer thought the novel was humdrum, in other words. There is something in the woods that is described, and this particular description is so reminiscent of the big monster at the end of The Mist that I just had to make note of it. For example, Louis, the protagonist, is walking in the forest past the pet cemetery, when suddenly mist rolls into the picture. Then, after seeing some strange sights within the mist, Louis hears something eerily similar to that huge monster at the end of the film, The Mist: Louis came to a total halt, listening to that sound…that inexorable, approaching sound. [...] The mist stained to a dull slate-gray for a moment, but this diffuse, ill-defined watermark was better than sixty feet high. It was no shade, no insubstantial ghost; he could feel the displaced air of its passage, could hear the mammoth thud of its feet coming down, the suck of mud as it moved on. (King 363-64)I was drawn into the novel at this point because this passage illustrates that Pet Sematary is part of something much larger, the Dark Tower Universe. The passage made me go back and reread some other passages, other scenes within this novel, and sure enough, the evidence is there all along. The Pet Sematary is a gateway, an entry point into another dimension, like the car in From a Buick 8, and so many other settings in King’s work. When I realised this, I really started having fun reading Pet Sematary. All in all, for me, Pet Sematary was a really fun and enjoyable read. The novel contains all the characteristics of an early King novel (the vulgarisms, the sometimes crass writing), but it succeeded in catching my interest and bringing me along for the ride.As I think of this novel some more, I’ll of course post more on it here. That’s what makes the blogging format so enjoyable for me.

The book's premise is good, but it drags so much that it's hard to really enjoy it to it's full potential. In Pet Sematary, King takes 200-page plot and stretches it to over double that, leaving many of the scenes feeling overly long and tedious (i.e. the scene where the dad is breaking into the cemetery....then out of the cemetery...then back in because he forgot something...then out again...then stops for another 7 pages because he hears dogs...etcetra etcetra). I found myself many times wishing it would speed along instead of dwelling in repeatativeness. However, the end was good, and did leave me chilled.

When Louis Creed's cat, which his daughter loved, was killed on the road in front of his new house, his neighbour brought him to the Micmac Burying Ground to bury the animal. Though forewarned by a dream about the place, he did not realise its power until the cat came back to life the next day. Outwardly, the cat looked the same, but its behaviour had changed. It was no longer a docile pet, but a vicious hunter. Everything went on well for the Creed's family after the incident until Gage, Louis' youngest son, was killed on the road. Despite numerous supernatural ominous warnings to him, his daughter and his wife, he went and buried his son in the Burying Ground. Just as expected, the son came back as a demon and killed everyone.

After about a third of the book, it is obvious to readers how the book will end. Despite that, the author is able to capture the attention of the readers through the many subtle signs and ominous premonitions. He conjures up a bleak and eerie atmosphere which makes the readers look behind their backs at night. A truly horror classic.

Whilst the imagery is quite disturbing and passes for top horror element combination, 'Pet Sematary' sometimes drags when it shouldn't and picks up pace and ends abruptly. The latter is obviously meant as a sort of a cliffhanger but the fact that it elaborates too much in the middle diminishes it somehow. A good book to keep your imaginations running wild and horror sensations tingling.

'Classic King' has taken a new level with me after I read the book. Growing up, I watched the movie and was terrified. A few years later and the book terrified me even more!

A fantastic story. The idea came from King, as his child was almost run over by a truck.

The novel is divided into three sections, each one shorter than the last. This makes the pacing rather off, but also allows for excellent character development.

As for the writing, it is creepy yet inviting. You really end up being with the characters and the macabre plot really chills you, instead of just trying to use shock or gore.

The result is a fantastic character study and horror experience.

This was my first stephen king book. It is very graphic and almost scared me to death.I mean, digging up your dead baby from the cemetary in the middle of the night is pretty creepy. I am still a huge king fan but prefer his early work which i recommend to someone who has not read king before. Carrie, The Shining, Christine, and of course Pet semtary to name a few
the book is so much better than the movie. It is one of the scariest books i have read and i am a huge horror book reader and highly recommend it

The movie scared the crap out of me as a kid and I was hoping the book would do the same thing. It started off great because I knew what would eventually come, but I couldn't help but wonder, with it taking so many pages (well over 100) for him to set up the scene, would I still even be giving this book a chance had I not seen the movie? Probably not.
There was too much detail in the small stuff for my taste and when it did pick up, the book was over.

This was my first Stephen King novel, read when I was around 14 years old. After hearing much of the hype surrounding Stephen King's novels and his claim to "horrify the living soul" out of anybody and being a huge fan of horror stories and books concerning the macabre (stemming from reading too many R.L.Stine books of course),I decided that my time had come to start reading Stephen King. After reading Pet Sematary, not only was I hugely satisfied, but truly delighted and couldn't stop praising King for several days to anybody who would listen.Yes,the book was horrifying,it was very chilling and had every element that is necessary to make a horror story complete.Just like King mentions in his foreword in the book Night Shift, and to misquote him here a bit,it was every bit like the gruesome details of a car accident that a person would stop by to look at.It had its surprising twists and moments that at first grab hold of you commandingly, mostly for a first time reader, but do not misunderstand me here;with every Stephen King novel or story you read, things get a lot more surprising, inevitable yes,but nevertheless truly shocking. He is amazing in the way he writes, and gosh does he have a keen eye for those really shocking details, and I don't mean the ghosts and monsters, for the morbid details of life that just seem to catch your breath and make you wonder. It's like as if the guy kind of knew what life really is and how actually horrifying it is in its complete absurdity.Like he was ....God. But enough here about the author and how I am so completely in love with him.
From the beginning, everything in the story seems to go alright, the happy family and their insecurities about a new place, but there is the growing sinister-like feel to the story no matter. The characters, almost all of them aside from our protagonist, seem very strong and demand a lot of attention. The way the mind works for most of these characters is unique yet almost hits home too.The plot grows with a good steady pace, and the details are too good to be true at times. The horror element is ever-present (as it must be) and the fear factor is very good.Enjoyed it very much for a first novel and overall,it was very good.
