Another novella that only scrapes the surface of the depths of Clive Barker's imagination. Again he titillates our senses, but stops short of over-exposing his underground race of mysterious creatures.

Cabal is a natural extension from the groundbreaking Books Of Blood with Barker still honing his familiar themes. Ahead-of-it's-time body horror, post-Fruedian identity issues, a rampant serial-killer and a brand new mythology for monsters provides enough material for a lifetime's work. The once precocious Barker squeezes everything into a relatively slim volume yet his natural dialogue, deft character strokes and punchy yet eloquent prose make the fantasy entirely plausible. Despite the concluding set-up for sequels Barker has never returned to continue anti-hero Boone/Cabal's journey. Fans will have to make do with Barker's own darkly brilliant movie adaptation, alternatively titled: Nightbreed.

No está mal, aunque creo que puede ser un libro extraño para quien no haya visto la película (que se tituló Razas de noche en España).

i am currently reading this book for the fourth time.

Every time I read it, the story Cabal makes more sense and becomes more beautiful to me than it was at the time of the previous reading.

it could be seen as sick and gratuitous, the scene between Lori and Boone in his jail cell; but, on this read I found it so emotional and beautiful. What he had never been able to give her in life, actual sexual intimacy, even though he loved her dearly; (because he was so fraught with mental problems & filled with so many pills to ease said problems) he was able to finally give her in death. After he died, he was able to love her the way he had always wanted to and she had. Lori knew and saw that he was dead, riddled with bullet holes (& bullets still filling those holes), a true monster, and ice-cold to the touch, even his bodily fluids. Yet she did not care. She loved him even after he became some amazing living dead creature, when he became nightbreed, when he joined the myriad forms (each a unique breed of monster) that lived in Midian...it was a beautiful moment in the novella... Very terrible that it was not in the movie version, "nightbreed".

I haven't started re-reading the short stories in the book yet, but i remember that How spoilers bleed is a standout. amazing piece of horror fiction.

clive barker is far better than stephen king ever was.

As usual Clive's prose is absolutely stomach churning yet compelling. Every book of his threatens to peel off some humanity
