Kind of typical romance story revolving around a woman who has self esteem and body issues. She's kind of a familiar character: embittered, sarcastic and witty -- somehow this is all ok, as she's allowed a certain amount of leeway since society doesn't think highly of her. The message in the book though, is a little familiar; good things will happen to good people and that one is really only worthy of something (or some one) if one feels that one is. It's as much about the love of another as much as it is about the love of one's self.

Describing this book as a typical chic lit is like describing Shrek as a typical fairytale. They have something in common but the whole point is that one is at odds with the other. Jennifer Weiner's novel undermines the nature of 90210 culture....its characters and plots. This is a real story about a real woman. It is for woman reader. The humour is great to the point that you will find yourself laughing aloud.

When Cannie reads an article written by her ex-boyfriend titled "Loving a Larger Woman," she goes off the deep end. The reason she gets so upset is that Bruce's surprisingly perceptive observations about her body issues hit home and force her to examine her life and what she really wants out of it. Was Bruce Mr. Right all along?

A few of the plot twists stretch credibility, but, overall, an entertaining read. Many women will see a bit of themselves in Cannie's struggle to love herself.

I liked Good in Bed much better than I normally like chick-lit. It was well on its way to being tossed aside as a typical chick-lit sort of book where the woman is all weepy about her lost love and needs a man to find peace with herself. Then something interesting happened: Cannie got pregnant. Although she was still pining away, she grew up a bit and realized she is a strong and independent woman on her own. She finds her way with the help of her family and friends. Finally, something a little different from all the other cookie-cutter chick-lit novels out there!

For a "chick lit" book I found this one incredibly hard to get into. There was so much emphasis on her past and her failed relationships with her father and former boyfriends. While I feel those things were probably important to character development, I was incredibly bored with it...

I wanted to love Cannie but in the end she just annoyed me and left me yearning for a strong, independent "larger" woman.

Jennifer Weiner writes in a blunt, we've all been there, funny style. This book is hilarious yet you really 'feel' for the main character. Career problems, guy problems, eating problems...its all real life and she makes it light and funny, but remains true to the fact that she's writing from a perspective that many women have found themselves in at one time or another. If we can't laugh at ourselves, what have we learned, right?

I really loved this book a lot more than most in the chick lit set... Cannie & the other characters are flawed, but wonderfully so. The book was semi-realistic, but I could relate to it in many ways. If you liked In Her Shoes, you'll love this one!
(And now I'm off to read Certain Girls- the sequel to Good In Bed)

This is a book that starts out very strong, 5 stars even. Nicely written, entertaining and the main character is someone I relate to on so many levels from her weight insecurities, family troubles, to her relationship problems. Where the book loses it for me is in the second half where it relies too heavily on melodrama - to the point it finishes like a bad made for TV miniseries. It's a shame but still worth a read in my opinion. I enjoyed it despite the end.

I read In Her Shoes when I was much younger. At the time, I rather liked it (or appreciated it for what it was, anyway). This book...not so much. Though the main character is witty, she's so consistently self-obsessed and whiny (I would have happily been spared several of the terrible Tanya anecdotes - or at least a little more introspection/understanding by the end) that I was completely distracted. Additionally... does this seem to anyone else like a tweeny-bopper fantasy? Ugly duckling has life magically fall in place for her and becomes a beautiful swan, what with the movie star friends and sudden adaptation of a screen play into a movie? Are you kidding me?

Meh. If you only want some beach read "chick lit" then I suppose this will suffice. It does, however, remind me what I never read "chick lit" - and won't be trying it again.

So I did promise I'll tear this one down and here goes.
Jennifer Weiner's Good In Bed kicks off with a promising start but unfortunately fizzles out midway. Cannie, the narrator is a plus sized woman and the whole story revolves around her physicality. Some authors have managed to bring out such personalities with flair and wit, but Weiner's character is 'witty' and 'charming' by her own description 'only'.
The brilliant start I was talking about is Cannie's ex-boyfriend Bruce writing an article about her which pretty much sums up all (or almost all that can fit into a book) the issues that are later unnecessarily painfully blown up through both plot and description.
The father angle for example. Childhood trauma like that is totally unsuitable for a light read like this and spoils your entire reading experience. You don't need an awfully abusive father like the one Cannie has to feel unloved if you are overweight. The minor traumas you face everyday could alone dent your personality if you aren't strong enough.
In fact Weiner did good enough a job in explaining the plight of an overweight woman when she describes the incident where Cannie assumes she was on a date while the guy, being new to the city, had mere friendship in mind. The inclusion of the stormy father-daughter relationship hangs like a dead weight in your mind all through the book but does nothing for the character.

Cannie's character is completely torn down--or flooded away--with her incessant tears at every damn thing and in front of everybody, unreasonable and sometimes irritable decision making , total disregard for extraordinary strokes of luck that come her way coupled with her unbreakable resolve to stay pathetic every step of the way.

The plot--well, I don't have to complain it is predictable this time, but it is third degree annoying with its unpredictability. There are too many twists and turns in Good In Bed that bring little effect on the characters themselves, that by the time you're done with three quarters you are just waiting for the damn thing to get over.
Yes, Cannie just had to have a horrible father and have her whole personality autopsied in a national magazine by her actually very nice ex-boyfriend who she just had to have and then had to become BFFs with a movie star and sell her screenplay in Hollywood, earn all the millions she wanted, but still had to get pregnant to finally start feeling comfortable in her body.
But don't you think your plight is over just yet! Poor Cannie should also suffer from a traumatic childbirth when her god-knows-how-many-pounds body is pushed by Bruce's new ultra-petite girlfriend and then the child also had to suffer and Cannie had to stay depressed for a whole while even with movie-star-moral-support and millions.
The biggest gag of all this I think is the guy who knew her only as a pathetic sob story should fall for her! And so badly at that!

Bruce's character was pretty decent behavior wise and Weiner had to make him pathetic in appearance and 'bad in bed' just because he wasn't the one. There was no point to the whole Cannie-Bruce saga and so obviously at that, that we are left frustrating with the continual inclusion of useless Bruce in the plot.

Cannie Shapiro does have her bright moments, but very rare lovable ones. And she is not remotely as vibrant or lovable as my own plus sized friends.

PS: If the title is any encouragement for you to read the book, let me have the pleasure of informing you that the only love scene in the book is 'positively revolting'.

I enjoyed this book. I was unsure at first, but then I just let myself read and enjoy it. No deep thinking, just plain fun reading. I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed the sillyness. I often thought "no way that would really happen", but then started thinking "how cool would it be if it really did happen" and reading it like that, made it so much fun. A quick summer read.

Great sumer read. If you live in or know of Philadelphia, you'll especially like this book as it captures many familiar South Jersey and Philadelphia city proper areas.
I lived in Philadelphia when I read this book which is where the story takes place. Because of this, I think I enjoyed the story much more than I would have otherwise since I could more easily imagine myself in the main character's footsteps as she walked about the city or traveled between Philly and Jersey. However, it's very much the same chic book I've read from countless other authors about a bigger girl trying to find love and self esteem etc. In the end, it all works out and has a happy ending.

This book is clever, invative, page turning with a lovable heroine, terrific characters, and an emotional take on life's priorities. This is a must-read for anyone who struggles with body image, or for anyone who cares about someone who does

A terrific book about a Philadelphia Inquirer columnist, Cannie Shapiro . She provides a unique view on visited on women trying to find their place in the world and deal with issues they have relatd to their self image as it relates to invents in their lives and their view of their bodies.

I found parts to be simply hilarious and other parts to be parts that most people in the Western world can relate to.

Briefly, Cannie graduated from from Princeton, lives in apartment in Philly, and has a job covering the entertainment section for the local newspaper that provides perks like lunch with the latest Oscar contenders.

The name of the book comes fromh a column called "Good in Bed", that her ex-boyfriend begins writing for a major woman's mag (think Glamour). His 1st article is, "Loving a Larger Woman," which starts a series of invasions of privacy into the relationship Cannie and her ex shared.

Cannie deals with all sorts of odd issues that come her way in feisty and funny way, I won't given any more away...Just Read the BOOK!!

its taken me FOREVER to finish off this book it was an ok read, you generally knew the ending before you started the book, however i was getting increasingly cheesed off with her going on and on about how fat she was and how no-one would love her etc etc, for gods sake she was portraying a size 16 SIZE 16 FGS you can call yourself fat when your having trouble finding anything to fit you in a size 28-30 NOT 16...honestly these people KNOW NOTHING when it comes to being fat and living in a world where you are judged on first appearences and nothing else.....maybe thats why its taken so long to read!!!

I loved how authentic this book is at the same time I found a majority of the book depressing. I really rooted for Cannie and loved her despite her self-destructiveness in places because that is how so many women I know, including myself are. At the same time, so much of the bad hit a little too close to home and so much of the good seemed like nothing that would ever happen in my own life. Good in Bed requires a tough skin at times and is certainly not the light-hearted, feel-good chick lit book that I thought it was when I picked it up. Despite that it is truly an incredible and well-written book that I think most women will be able to relate to.

This was a really good novel. I've read a few of Weiner's books now, and although I feel she basically recycles the same heroine over and over, (plus sized, witty with a swimming mother and absent father) they are infinitely readable. I'm definitely thinking that either Jennifer stole from SATC or vice versa, because there are just too many similarities for it to be a coincidence. Perhaps she wrote for the show? This novel's plot about breaking up with someone and feeling you made a mistake, when every one around you is telling you that the person is not right for you, resounded very clearly. Especially the eventual resolution. (Look Ma, no plot spoilers!) The twists and turns are interesting, although towards the end it's pretty dark. Apparently there's a somewhat recent sequel following up on Cannie's story, so I'm looking forward to reading that as well.

Horrible story, trite, predictable and the most obvious choices for a writer to make. Self-validating and boring. This book reminded me of those Jackie Collins books I used to read as a teenager, but worse because it pretends to be something it is not.

No depth at all and not funny, despite how often the author tells Cannie (the main character) that she is.

As another reviewer earlier on stated, I, too, was eye-rolling through out the whole story.

Plus, the 'fat doctor' kept bringing her freaking pastries. What is UP with that?

Jennifer Weiner - Good In Bed.

Summary Review:

- Good Read
- Great characters
- Funny
- I LOVE: that one of the characters is a lawyer (although that seems to be a recurring theme across Weiner's novels); the main character is confident and a writer. I love that she loves good food - and the amazing journey of self-discovery.

Bad points:

- Plot is at times, slightly predictable.

This book was a new one for me. The 'chick-lit' non-fiction genre is not one that I am usually drawn to, maybe because I had the same thought towards them as I do towards romantic comedy movies. Notice I said 'had'.
I thought 'Good In Bed' would bring me the usual story of girl in a world where all she wants is love until she meets boy, then girl falls in love with boy until boy does something stupid which makes girl angry and then at the end of it, boy somehow finds the way back to girl's heart and... they live happily ever after.

But I was wrong.

This was a great story. I love how, for once, the main character wasn't a skinny model-esque woman. Cannie was a great character who was put throgh a lot of different stressors but made it through all of these events relatively unscathed and in a better position afterwards. It was a wonderful story of ups and downs and dealing with what life throws at you.
