I cannot believe how long I actually waited to read this book.....for some reason or other I passed it by time and time again even though I loved Jodi....I guess the cover didn't grab me or the explanation of the story...however....once I cracked it open...as usual I was hooked...this offereing by Jodi is quite a bit more layered..(yes more than usual!) so I took a little more time reading it to absorb what all was really happening....it was totally about relationships and peoples quest for love and hurts that stand in the way of love....right up my alley..had some of the usually moral and ethical questions in there dealing with government involvement in sterilization programs and dna selection to produce designer babies....constantly in awe of Jodi Picoult...not sure how she does it and thinks of all these things and even makes them enjoyable and interesting to read but oh so glad she has the talent....loved it!

I originally picked this up as one of my daughter's friends said she'd like to read some Jodi Picoult. Having read it though I don't think I'd pass it on to a 13 year old. It was a fascinating exploration of ghosts, eugenics and the meaning of life centered on events which happened 70 years previously and the mystery contained in them.I had thought that Jodi Picoult's books were getting a bit samey but this was like nothing I've ever read before.

OK, ethnic minority? Check. Harried single parent? Check. Career woman who doesn't spend enough time with her child? Check. Plot twists telegraphed a little too early? Check. It's a Jodi Picoult novel and it's like all her others but this time with ghosts and a really annoying suicidal bloke who makes you wish he'd just get on and do it successfully. The historical part of the novel was WAY better than the modern-day part of it - like she kind of was using the modern-day people as part of a template but wasn't as engaged with them as she was with the historical story. Usual easy-to-digest entertainment - and I did like the little bit of 'hidden history' she brought out.

this was my 1st jodi picoult book and it didn't leave a good impression in me. i felt it too draggy and lengthy. a lot of times some part was repetitive. i heard a lot of good reviews about this author, so a i am going to pick up another picoult book, maybe it will be better. who knows i may love her other works.
