I started reading these books by accident some years ago. As soon as i relised that the main character was female, and an expert in a field which really appealed to the accident chaser in me, i was hooked. As spellbinding as they are, i feel that all work and no play makes Kay a very uptight girl.So i would have to go back to one of my fantasy providers in between each one to avoid becoming a bit strangulated myself. C'mon Pat, let kay get her hair down and dangle her tootsys in the sea.

Her early books are her best- they get odd over the last 2 or 3.

 what a disappointment!
This was a praised an 5time awardwinning novel of a world-known author, but the expectations weren't met. It's her first novel, but even then the story seemed very boring and constructed. It wasn't possible to guess the murderer, because it's somebody who isn't involved in the story or even introduced in a sidesentence. So it's very easy to fall for the author's constructed "villains".

Started the series from the beginning after reading a couple later in the series; good enough, but it does seem like the freshman offering after reading her later works.

First of Kay Scarpetta-books. Gives a view of the characteristics and history of the charactors. Thrilling story.

Cornwell is a guilty pleasure. Ordinarily, while I enjoy reading this sort of forensic crime/serial killer novel, it comes across as gum for the mind: the flavour is lost pretty quick, and then it gets repetitive and bland even quicker.

For reasons that are hard to pin down, Cornwell's work is different. Possibly because Scarpetta is such a convincing character, possibly because you feel she genuinely knows the subject matter, whatever: her novels like Post Mortem start slow, almost uninvolving and then...it becomes a page turner.

There are better Scarpetta novels out there, and far more memorable villains, but this is a confident start from a writer who has since climbed to the top of a very highly competitive market.

Worth a look.

Always found Cornwell interesting. Latest Scarpetta novels are flat and derivative, though.

Thought I'd finally get into this series from the beginning. This one was certainly a nice fast-paced read, and they tell me it gets better from here.

This is the debut novel of Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series. It is the first of the series that I have read, yet it is difficult to judge the book because of its subject matter. Scarpetta is a the Chief Medical Examiner for Richmond, VA. The book was published in 1990, hence it's coverage of forensics and computers is hopelessly dated. Dialing up to a mainframe? DNA is only recently being used. Perhaps this book would have read better in a pre-CSI, pre-Crossing Jordan world. Also, the whodunit isn't revealed until the end, leaving the reader without a chance to figure it out. The 'whodunit' is more of a 'howdunit.' That is to say about all to figure out is how the killer came across his victims.

Regardless of the flaws of the debut novel, it is a long running series and I plan to read more.

This story has a bit of a drag to it which is exacerbated by the near reversal of all the emphasis after the last murder victim is found. Until that point the speed was much too slow and it hurt to find that almost everything was invalidated. I wish Kay's gay assistant, Wingo (or something like that, downside of audio books) would have had a larger role. Marino was actually a bigger ass than in the sequel which may show a form of character development.

Was attracted to this book when I flipped thru a certain Cornwell book and in the inside of the back covers, it says POSTMORTEM won numerous awards. Looked for it, found it, read it and love it!The 1st book led me to the 2nd, and 3rd.. and 14th! ** Read the rest of her Scarpetta's books where she concocted great deal of forensics details with up real-life issues such as failed marriages, affairs, stale love relationship, broken family,on-the-surface- religious-beliefs, drinking problems, homosexuality, dirty politics, death, terminal illness, etc. The flaws this temporary American writer gives to all her characters indeed reflects and shows the fallen and sinful state of man. Despite all that intellectuals, power, reputation and richness, none of the characters ever truly find the real happiness, contentment and satisfaction in their lives.. Nevertheless, you will be hooked with the suspense and drama throughout the series which keep you wanting to read more! ** PS: read Scarpetta's series in sequence to get a better wholesome picture of the story plot. Trivia: the series actually influence development of forensic TV-Series such as CSI and Cold Case.
