Many attribute this play as Shakespeare's fiery woman's rights stand. With Kate getting the last word, I can see their point. However, there is little evidence in the play that he does not believe in taming shrews, and I think Shakespeare receives too much credit for this work. The play was in truth a comeback to another theater's "taming" play, who in the end challenge the audience to find a better way to tame a shrew. Despite his success Shakespeare was just a man making a penny, and this play along with many of his later plays always bring that again to light for me.

The writing is good, as always for Shakespeare, but I'm not a fan of the story. I know you have to put yourself in the time period to really appreciate it, but its hard to like a story where a man indimidates and terrifies a woman into submission. This story was actually taken from a similar Spanish story, which is even more gruesome and terrible. Shakespeare's version is better, but still hard to appreciate for a modern woman.

Funny, witty and comical! Finally a play by William Shakespeare that isn’t a tragedy! It is basically a play about how the youngest daughter in the Baptista family, Bianca, cannot be courted until the oldest daughter Katharina is married. The problem is Katharina is known to be ill tempered, difficult, and out-spoken. So how is this problem solved? Through trickery and manipulation! The suitors of the younger sister contrived a plan to pursue Petruchio in courting Katharina. In the end Petruchio succeeds in taming the “shrew” and this is seen when Katharina gives a speech about the virtues of being a wife. However, when reading the speech I do wonder if Katharina was really tamed or just pretending because it seems kind of unrealistic that a woman as strong as Katharina would change her ways that easily.Overall, the play was very enjoyable to read. I recommend it to anyone who just wants to kick back and have a good laugh.

This is one of Shakespeare's weirdest plays, and a lot of fun.
I actually am reading the Arden version, which has more footnotes than a sane reader can consider, along with my invaluable Applause First Folio, and marking up a Cambridge Student version with my own notes.(Did I mention I'm in a cast and have spare time?)
What happens to Sly and the on-stage viewing audience after Act 2, Scene1? Arden supposes the version we have is an incomplete one, for whatever reason, possibly the reduced economics of the London stage in the early 1590s. It doesn't seem likely the Bard would leave such a dangling theatrical issue just hanging around with no mention. The whole Folio script itself has numerous sloppy errors and omissions in it.

The Taming of the Shrew comedy by William Shakespeare. It was one of his earlier plays, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1594.[1] The play begins with a framing device in which a drunkard is deceived into thinking he is a nobleman who then watches the "play" itself, which depicts a nobleman, Petruchio, who marries an outspoken, intelligent, and bad-tempered shrew named Katherine. Petruchio manipulates and "tames" her until she is obedient to his will. The main subplot features the courting of Katherine's more conventional sister Bianca by numerous suitors. The content has become the subject of considerable controversy. The play has been adapted numerous times for opera, stage, screen and musical theatre, including Cole Porter's well-known version, Kiss Me Kate.

This stuff just doesn't catch or keep my attention, and I'll read anything, even the ingredients label if nothing else is within reach... Shakespeare may be classic, but is just not interesting. At least it's short... I can't expound on the plot of this story because after re-reading sentence after sentence I eventually tuned it out. It was work to finish this and I know why I had never read it before...

Watch the old Elizabeth Taylor movie as you read it. Such comedy! I really liked this one. Like The Comedy of Errors, it's not quite as intense and deep as a lot of Shakespeare's work, making it more approachable to a younger audience like myself. Now I want to watch 10 Things I Hate About You--an even more relevant adaptation for modern youth.

Sometimes I think Shakespeare was a woman! :-)
Or that he read women' minds as easy as he wrote his plays.
Still, even so, one can not see that Katherine's spirit is not entirely controlled by Petruchio, fact that leaves us to believe that Petruchio, like Katherine, has understood the need for compromise, that we can't entirely change the ones we love and accept them as they are.
In my opinion, the Taming of The Shrew shows can be regarded as a play for a good marriage.
A long and good relationships has ups and downs, fights (easy ones, not hitting) and make ups, sun and rain.Like life,in a way. Even if sometimes is hard for our ego, we must learn to respect the opinions of others, if we truly care for them.
Hence, the taming leads both ways: the taming of Kat,and the taming of Petruchio. Love and understanding tame everyone.
To be read while listening to Leonard Cohen's music

Ive never known that Mr. Shakespeare was such a narrow-minded man!! there's no such thing called "obedience" in any relationship; there's understanding

T'was witty as the book t'were, thee lovely lady Katherine's last monologue leftith a foul taste in thine mouth. The story art amassed with deception - mayhaps Shakespeare dost not truly agree with thee misogenistic viewith of thee pigith Petruchio. Whence didst independence becomith the same as prude and shrew?

Personally, I did not like what "10 Things I Hate About You" did to this play. They turned it completely around, making it a sort of modern-day feminist production, instead of the original, patriarchal comedy it is. In order to truly understand this play, it must be studied in the context of the time period. The sexual humor, the requirements of a wife, and the reversal of Kate and Bianca's characters doesn't really come across in the movie as it does in the play. And Kate's eventual subjugation, whether you interpret it as an act to placate Petruchio or a true reversal of her nature, is far more powerful in Shakespeare's play.

Not that I don't like that movie. I enjoyed it greatly, but not as an interpretation of the play.

I absolutely loved this book. The reverse psychology that goes on in this book is eloquently detailed through many allusions...I do recommend a commentary or more simpler version if you read it on your own, though, because I read it in class and with a teacher it was much easier. Definitely recommend, however!
