I have a thing for wit and a sharp tongue. If the story had just been about Claudio and Hero I would have put it down within seconds but Beatrice and Benedick made me laugh so hard I nearly peed myself more than once!! Shakespeare has a way of making stories that would otherwise be boring into a nice little comic for those of us who are sick and tiered of the whole tragic love thing!

Much Ado About Nothing shows clearly the pointlessness about making a big deal over nothing. Beatrice and Benedict argue over the virtue of Beatrice's cousin. While Benedict is content to accept the word of a man wishing to cause trouble who says that Hero, Beatrice's cousin is not as virtous as she seems; Beatrice is defensive of Hero who never did a thing to anybody. Throughout the book the two, Beatrice and Benedict argue over seemingly nothing. All the while, Hero's reputation is at stake.

One of my favorite Shakespearian plays. I tend to relate so much with Beatrice and her relationship with Benedict. She is so strong willed, yet gentle within her origin. One would think that she would either want a docile man or no man at all. She finds her love amidst the clamour between herself and her masked love. . . A man, who like herself, is strong willed yet gentle at his origin. The reason that I fell in love with Benedict, is due to the simple fact that he illustrates to the regular populace his facade of power and strength ... yet this woman ( a woman that he trusts his life with) melts that mask away, and allows his love and gentility to shower upon her. The usages of dramatic setting ironies , as well as wonderful monologues makes this beautiful.

Love this comedy! I feel quite accomplished that I understood Shakespeare's humor! I didn't think I would like it when I read it, but now it is a favorite from the greatest playwright of all time!
If you can't stand just reading Shakespeare, get the movie version: Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Michael Keaton, Robert Sean Leonard (Wilson from House)! Best cast EVER! Hilarious stuff! One of Shakespeare's more amusing plays. Much Ado is probably my favorite of his comedies!

A portrait of today's woman! And of the endless war between sexes!Witty and lovely, as Mr. Shakespeare used to write.
Still, I believe that this play is addressed not to the women, but to the men,so to help them see the essence, not only the looks, the spirit, not only the beauty.
Women are described here as they should be, equals to the men, not objects, having own opinions, own beliefs and being respected for that.
Maybe a play also for the feminists, on showing them that no human being is (more) superior to another.
I think that this one is a must for every man and woman, a play that should be given to the kids since they learn how to read.

"Much Ado About Nothing" is a funny play about two lovers, Hero and Claudio, who conspires with Don Pedro, the prince of Aragon, to try and set up their friends, Beatrice (Hero's cousin) and Benedick (Claudio and Pedro's friend). The problem is Beatrice and Benedick are two very strong, clever, and stubborn characters, that refuse to admit that they are in love with one another. Instead they argue and insult one another in a very witty sarcastic type of way (kind of like modern day flirting), thus making the play very comical.

And of course with most Shakespeare's romantic plays, there is always the theme of deception. In this case this comes in the form of Don John, Don Pedro's illegitimate brother who tries to sabotage Claudio and Hero's wedding by making Claudio believe his lover had been unfaithful. Again, this brings up the same question that I have with all of Shakespeare's romantic plays and that is if you love someone that much how can you be so easily fooled into believing that person would deceive you? This is why I rarely think the male characters in Shakespeare's romantic/tragic plays are very heroic.

Overall though, I did enjoy reading this play. Only because I really liked Beatrice character and I think it is very cute how Benedick slowly becomes "whipped" as he falls in love.

Quirky and punning comedy about, well, “nothing” and “noting” and “doting” and, oh well, all sorts of sexual innuendoes and double entendres (the man’s name is BeneDICK, for God’s sake! Shakespeare knew what he was doing.). But a satisfying ending with the marital joining of the two bickering couples, although, it does get a touch dark and dramatic in the middle when they think that Hero has died. But hey! Maybe she did die and maybe she didn’t....it’s nothing much ado to that inescapable happy ending!

Like most of Shakespeare's plays, so I'm not your average reviewer here, you'll mostly read praise. Comic timing, wonderful meter and rhyme, probably a shorter and easier read than many of his plays. Give'er a go.

With the battle against Don Jon won, his brother retires to Messina for a few fun skirmishes betwixt Benedick and Beatrice. Their merriment keeps the play rolling through Hero's tragic setback and Claudio's rash decisions. Many, many times Benedick shuns marriage for the risk of cuckoldry, which is felt by Claudio even before marriage. The situation he creates loudly argues that the greatest harm is in the mind. Women are not so open. On the contrary, towards the end after being caught in the Duke's trap, Benedick flirts with Margaret even as he courts Beatrice! Yet, with all fears forgotten, the couples find happiness in the pairings made by Don Pedro.

This is my favorite of Shakespeare's comedies. It's a wonderful selection to use when teaching the different types of irony. Plus I like to use this play with high schoolers because it doesn't come off quite so high-brow. They relate to the characters, misunderstandings, gossip, love triangles. And on the more seriously academic side of things, the play also illustrates Shakespeare's skill with language and sophisticated understanding of human nature which makes him so universally applicable.

The two relationships are wonderful foils to eachother. Every version I've seen of this - simply read in my Shakespeare class, performed as intended, the Kenneth Brannaugh directed version of the movie, and even an Indian themed production of it - have been wonderful. I love the Beatrice and Benedict relationship, but the other aspects of it are very good too. My favorite part, I must say, is Benedict's silioquy, containing: "the world must be peopled!" Makes me laigh every time, not because I'm immature, but because no matter how you read it, it's funny to see the literally immediate change in Benedict's character.

Also, seriously, the movie is amazing. It's filled with stars, and is the best adaptation of Shakespeare I have ever seen, and probably will ever see. If you can't stand to read Shakespeare, watch the movie, because it's understandable, and this play is not one worth missing. Even my cynical, Shakespeare-hating little brother will sit down and watch Much Ado About Nothing when I put it in, and he likes it. :-)

So funny, yet it is almost a tragedy. Beatrice and Benedick are possibly my favourite literary couple of all time. It makes me laugh out loud.
