What are readers saying about The Tempest (New Folger Library Shakespeare (Paperback))?

This is, in my opinion, quite possibly the best work Shakespeare has ever produced. In terms of his plays, this was his last true play, his swan song, his last work was a historical play and hence doesn't really count as an altogether original piece of stage craft. Those familiar with "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Macbeth," "Caesar," and, yes, "Romeo and Juliet," will recognize some common threads from each play as they present themselves in "The Tempest." However, where those pieces inevitably ended in tragedy and death, Shakespeare flirts with tragedy in the service of delivering decidedly less tragic consequences.

I like Shakespeare, and this one was a favorite as a child; but now I don't like it so much. The plot has no tension, the characters are all flat, though Prospero battles a bit with himslef. The only enjoyable part for me was Caliban, but in such a short play it doesn't hold long. This is a good, unabridged edition with lots of extra goodies, worth the 50 cents.

Although the language is not the best -- fewer memorable lines, I really enjoyed this one. Never piss off someone who could become a sorcerer. Isn't there an list of what evil villains should do? I am sure that enemies should be executed immediately rather than put on an island with their spellbooks.
The language is not the best, but a very enjoyable play. Kind of like Midsummer's without the question of the changeling. Never wrong someone who can/will be a sorcerer

A friend who knew how much I loved Shakespeare’s works introduced this play to me. At first I was kind of hesitant about reading this play because I was questioning how comical can the play be if it is about a bunch of people who gets trapped on a boat in the middle of a storm and then end up on a deserted island. However, I was surprisingly amused. The characters of the play were very... well...interesting and vivid. And when you add magic and spirits into the plot, things can get very entertaining.

My favorite character was probably the protagonist of the play, Prospero, Duke of Milan, because of his intelligence and his tricky tactics. But mostly because he developed from a revengeful character to one who learns how to forgive.

Overall, I recommend this play because it is just a lot of fun to read.

Depending on how you read this play, it can be an interesting story about colonialism or a boring love story/story of redemption. I must admit I am not the biggest Shakespeare fan. Now, before anyone stone me, I will say he is one of the greatest playwrights to ever grace this Earth. However, I find him to be a little too dry for my modernist tastes. Give me Oscar Wilde or Henrik Isben or even Tennessee Williams any day of the week. Shakespeare just doesn't speak to this era like people from the 18th century onwards...

i read the preface to the newest collegiate edition of this forgotten classic
and it said one thing i managed to remember.
"everybody wants to say that this is the culmination of all the many moods of William
Shakespeare "
and in my opinion it kinda is.
though for me it was an immensely difficult read (literally pages that i just sorta glazed
past and there being only about 95 of them everyone counts y' know)
i picked up on all the classic elements.
the drama the tension even comedy (Okay maybe not haha comedy. but i bet you could get a few hearty guffaws around the tea table reciting a few verses)
I'm not saying this is the best to start with and that it's basically hamlet Othello midsummers...etc combined.
but by then i think he had won the hard earned lessons of age and it showed.
so basically good read, but start elsewhere...say midsummers or hamlet.

What criticism can you levy against the Tempest except that it is too short? One senses that it might have been so much more, yet the maturity here demonstrates how mastefully Shakespeare melds comedy, revenge, intrigue, love and magic against a backdrop of burgeoning Colonialism. I returned to it purely out of a curiosity to examine the similarities with ABC's Lost. Within an act, though, I was so completely enchanted again by the story and lyricism I forgot all about why I was reading it.

Shakespeare's farewell is eloquently expressed in this tale of allusion. The story, lasting only the span of an afternoon, makes constant reference to events beginning 24 years in the past, relying on them for translation and understanding of issues in the present. Much in the same way, we have to draw from many travelers' tales even from the age of Jason and Theseus. On the island, we see a replica of the new colonial system in Prospero, his child, and Caliban the native. The abuse of Caliban leads me to wonders what Shakespeare means when Miranda says, "O, brave new world that has such people in it" (V.i.217-218). In the intricate weave of myth and harsh reality, we also see Shakespeare shining through as Prospero, the author of all, who asks the audiences hands to release him to return to his dukedom, in Milan or Stratford-upon-Avon, as you will.

I read this during my third year at high school, which may have been why I didn't enjoy it very much, when accompanied with an educational puppet version of the play I remember becoming slightly confused.

Shakespeare's worst play, I don't care what the scholars say. It is boring, it shifts into magical crap halfway through that doesn't make sense and, I'm sorry, but NOBODY that has been stranded on an island for 15 years with their daughter (who was an infant when the marooning happened) would suddenly say, "Forgive and Forget!" just because she falls in love. Especially not when they've been planning revenge for 15 years.. that crap just isn't real.

Worlds better than Cymbeline, but not as good as Pericles. I did like how the plot seemed fresh and new, unlike some of Shakespeare's other works. The opening scene with the storm was really cool. I didn't like the fact that Sebastian and Antonio weren't punished, b/c I just don't buy their "conversion"--I still think they'd betray Alonso and/or Prospero again in a heartbeat. Also, I felt like the romance b/n Miranda and Ferdinand was a little too quick to be believable. Interesting, but just a one-time read.

William Shakespeare’s ’The Tempest’ is a tale of ambition, temptation and revenge. There is romance introduced to offer some relief from the heavy duty supernatural stuff that happens throughout.Thehumour,as in all other of the bard’s plays is very down-to-earth.It is indeed wonderful that the same person who is able to write about high philosophy is so conversant with the ways of the hoi-polloi.The setting for the play is a lonesome island. The very soiltary nature of the place makes for magic, love and conspiracy. Some people are out to seek revenge. Some lust for power. And two beautiful people come close and fall in hopeless love. The hero of the play is the island and the inclement weather. The story is thus.Prospero used to be Duke of Milan. When he took leave of his charge for studies in magic his brother Antonio usurped the position. Prospero was forced to come to a desolate island with his daughter Miranda. Here he became master of occult. With the help of his powers he brings to the island his brother, the king of Naples and the latter’s brother.A ship carrying all these people wrecks.Ferdinand, the king’s son is also on the island after losing contact with co-passengers on the ship. Prospero uses his magic to bring everyone together at the right time and his Dukedom is restored. Ferdinand grows to love Miranda and their match is approved. There is a hilarious attempt at drunken rebellion by Prospero’s slave Caliban.Exciting yet funny!
