Richard's speeches in Act 5 were unbelievable! Some of the best speeches I've read. Sure, I didn't understand everything Shakespeare was saying but the metaphors and images were quite profound.

Perhaps the best Shakespearean play - Richard is delightfully evil! HIs opening monologue is fantastic!

Ah, Richard II. The end of an era. This play tells the tragic downfall of King Richard II. He is the last of the true kings. The last king to have the "Divine Right." His end beings when he banishes his kinsman Henry Bolingbroke from the Kingdom. If that wasn't bad enough while Bolingbroke to is away, Richard uses Bolingbroke's money to fund his foreign wars. Henry doesn't take this lying down. He gathers an army of rebels and seizes the capital while Richard is weak from the wars, and captures the weak king. Bolingbroke demands to be made king, and states Richard is no longer fit to rule, since he steals and mistreats his subjects. Richard tries to defend himself with his Divine Right, but the people won't have it, and Richard is forced off the throne. Henry Bolingbroke is crowned King Henry IV. Richard II is executed and it paves the way for a new line of kings.

I thought I would go back and re-read some of Shakespeare's plays. I started with this one and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Well written (of course) but totally skewed to Tudor politics, thus villifying Richard III for hundreds of years!

Wonderful speeches, mainly by young nobles circling and hissing at each other, throwing down gages (the 'oh no you di-n't' of Shakespeare's time)... and of course, the famous 'this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England' which will raise a tear in an Englishman's eye faster than singing 'Jerusalem'. For all the chest thumping, not a lot of action (only when Richard rounds on his murderers), but Henry IV will get the ball rolling...

I enjoy The New Cambridge Shakespeare edition - explains most everything I want it to, and much more besides if you're interested in Shakespeare's own reference material.
