Actually quite a tight little book. It's dead-aimed at kids so it's a breeze to flip through and the author really nailed the structure of a fairy tale. All of the characters are well-drawn even if overly-explained and the ending is just a little too neat to be completely effective. The story itself has been defined as "magical realism" which is a phrase that I am finding simply means "magical." Great read.

Oh, now this was such a sweet book. Fast and light, simple but intelligently written, with a warm heart and a nice dash of humor. It seems odd to find a modern children's story this earnest that doesn't come across as dumbed down; so often, authors feel like they need to be snarky in order to appeal to kids above the age of seven, and that just isn't so. While there's nothing wrong with snarkiness when it's done right, it's also nice to see a book that's simply filled with earnest, honest wonder.

I have a soft spot for unusual, dark horse characters as mains...especially of they are inconsequential creatures such as rats & mice. Fascinating read!

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is a funny, romantic, and sometimes dark an dscary book for young and older readers to share and enjoy. As a fourth grade teacher my students and I delved into the life of Despereaux Tilling, an unusual mouse, who has the courage of a night, and the ears of Dumbo. We felt sorry for him as his family treated him like an outcast. We felt admiration for him as he faced trials too big for any normal mouse to conquer. And we felt hope for him as he finally found the path that he belonged on.

This book offers many chuckles and some tears, as well as great language arts lessons. The vocabulary is rich, and offers opportunity for study. The metaphors and the use of the themes of dark vs. light allow students to practice literary analysis.

It is a truly romantic book, without all of the kissy, kissy, but with all that romance should offer.
