Before you go to Australia.. must read it! Bill in his typical style narrates the funny side of Australia... I never knew Ausis lost a Prime Minister to sea waves "In 1967 the Prime Minister (of Australia), Harold Holt into the surf and vanished" .. Though am not sure... if it happen!I am thankful to Ahmet Ozirmack, a Turck and my previous senior colleauge at ILO, introduced me to the work of Bill Bryson...

Hilarious and informative! Odd combination I know, thehistory of Australia, as pointed out by Bill, is not really know to many, let alon Australians!! Still he manages to wander round and find interesting facts and figures about all manner of related topics. Would recommend it to anyone, especially those who are travelling or have travelled to Oz!

Oh, or maybe this was the first Bryson book I ever read... I really don't remember! It *is* the primary reason I'm proud to be able to remember the name of the Australian prime minister though. XD

I normally am a big fan of Bill Bryson, but living in Australia it was a bit galling for him to continually criticise but cover it with a generic "but I love Australia". The thing about his writing normally is that love it or hate it he includes fantastic funny anecdotes, and I found that somewhat lacking in this book. However, all is forgiven for his comments that John Howard was more boring than the head of the Funeral Directors Association of Yangebup.

I am currently re-reading this book. One of the few books that make me laugh out loud. It did it again today whilst eating my lunch and getting strange looks as i try not to choke whilst laughing and eating. Probably serves better than any travel guide. Read it if your thinking of going to Australia (and still read it if your not!)Even just the section on the fauna and flora that can kill you, eat you or just make you scream in agony will make you laugh.

one of bryson's best. his version of waltzing matilda had me in stitches, and i loved his description of listening to cricket as radio reception fades in and out. bryson can always make me laugh.

I really enjoyed this, I picked it up when i first knew I was moving to Oz. I have tried in the past to read other books by him but I think I'm just not that bothered about reading other people's experiences abroad. this however kept me engaged and I even laughed out loud a few times (which I never do). i keep popping back into now that i live in Oz to figure out where places are.

Hilarious, better than any regular guide book. A wonderful read even if you have never been to Australia (and I haven't). Gave my copy to an Aussie relative and he loved it too.

Have learned a lot more than I ever knew about the history and geography of Aus,most of it humerous. I am now positive that I never want to go there-Too many snakes,spiders, crocodiles and sharks.

Livre intéressant et très documenté. J'ai par contre trouvé la lecture vraiment fastidieuse par moments, mais je ne suis pas trop amatrice du genre du récit de voyage.

Bryson and I have fallen in love with one of the greatest continents on the planet… Australia. It’s a huge place and it took me 6 months to travel every corner, yet I feel that was not enough time, and from reading this I feel Bill needs to spend more time discovering this gigantic continent. Which is only a minor complaint, he hurtles around the country missing some of the highlights along the way. But that is the nature of travel in Oz, you can’t see everything it’s just too bloody big. He has a burning passion for the place, the people and of course the beer. All of this is on the page and is very engaging. It’s a brilliant advertisement for the country and I think the Oz sense of humour shines in this book despite the fact that the author is a Yank. It contains a multitude of laugh out loud moments and is hard to put down. If you have been to Oz it’s a good reminiscing session and if you’re planning a trip it will excite and influence you.
