I truly enjoyed this book. Herald Alberich had long since been a favorite character of mine. If you ever wondered about this particular character, this is the book for you. This is a fast paced story of how someone thought to be an enemy can turn out to be the most loyal defender. Could not put this one down.

Excellent, excellent book. I haven't enjoyed a "fantasy" novel in a long time. This book contained a large element of "realism" that was quite refreshing. The description of poverty in the lower classes added that certain "something" that most fantasy novels are missing. It took the romanticism out of the time. In this day and age we tend to only look at the fairy-tale "niceness" of the past and we never think about how hard it must have been. While this book does add some of that "fairy-tale" later on, it doesn't lose too much of its grip on reality. This is the first book by Lackey that I have read and am looking forward to reading more.

I actually wish there were a few more books on him, because I really liked learning about the seedy underworld of Valdemar, but again, well-written, good characterization, very cool plot.

This is a nice fluffly story with almost no sex and almost no violence. That's pretty difficult to say about a war story! Yet, it has wise white horses, a hot and physical hero, and telepathy and everything a teenage girl could dream up. It's a good piece of fluffy reading which does touch on honor, values, and identity. It's a very good read when a person needs a touchstone to help them make an ethical decision. And, it's also a great read for cuddling up and just enjoying the hero's quest with super cool grown up "My Little Pony" buddies. I do like the stressing of the importance of education. Good - just not JRR Tolkien.

I really enjoyed this one. Normally, I can only take small doses of Lackey, because if I load up, I start to feel bored with her writing. But this one has a different energy, it seems to me. Maybe it's the character of Alberich, maybe it's all the well-done battle scenes, but I didn't want to put this down.

I had read 'The Heralds of Valdemar' series which has the same character in it but was disappointed with this book. I thought it would be rather exciting, which it wasn't. The character development didn't do it for me, the story lacked excitement, and it was quite boring to read at some points. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone - it seemed like something the author wrote on a whim without putting much thought and effort into it. Its definitely not one of Mercedes Lackey's best written works.

The first book in the Valdemar series that I read, it made me completely amazed at the skill Lackey has with the ability to change distinct linguistic sounds into words on paper. Skif, the main character, who reappears many times in the future in other Valdemar novels, is quite simply one of my favorite characters, the cheeky skamp. A good starting book for first time Lackey readers.
