Braving through the slow pace in the beginning pays off big by the time you get to the end and are chomping at the bit to get to the next book in the series.A different take on religious wars and what people groups do in the name of faith revenge and what they can achieve in the face of extreme circumstances and still deem themselves too weak to face the next obstacle.

As the first in this series, this book is engaging and quickly pulls you into the characters. The entire series is similar to, and as good as Jordan's Wheel of Time series. One of my long-time favorite books.

This Fantasy Trilogy is very, very long. Longer than The Lord of the Rings; fortunately it lack the long, boring chapters in that trilogy. Tad Williams has created a work of art with all the right portions of action, history, ronance and so on. It has the young boy that acts like a here and some how gets the girl in the end. It's got a beautiful, rebellious, young princess. And it's got an immortal race that has apparently outgrown ripping itself to pieces.

Unfortuately, the work is not so original. Many of the character's names sound oddly like names from The Lord of the Rings and some certain objects are oddly similar to some other certain objects in that same trilogy. Even so, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a worthwhile read.

Tad Williams weaves a complicated tapestry of sorcery, fear, love, betrayal, and adventure in the first book of his epic trilogy. He has built characters who you love, love to hate, and most of all, love to read about. His writing sweeps you away into the world of Osten Ard, a place of mystery, deceit, and hope. A definite page-turner; I couldn't put it down. I list this book on my Top Three favorites. Highly recommended!

Simon starts out as a bumbling boy in this trilogy and grows into an amazing man who is a hero. Great fantasy with fantastic characters and exciting story lines. I have read this trilogy several times, and I rarely read a book twice.

After struggling through the first 150 pages of this book I ended up really liking it. It takes a long time to really get started but by the middle things are pretty much happening non stop and then the ending really made me want to run out and buy the next book in the series.

Tad William's epic trilogy starts off with some great in depth character development, and several potential storylines begin to evolve.
Williams has succeeded in creating a new fantasy trilogy that is on the same level as Lord of the Rings, yet does not ripoff Tolkien's unique characters and ideas.
The only thing that could hinder potential readers is the slow start that the first book has. There is not a lot of action at the beginning of this story which can scare some readers, who are only used to the current style of action packed adventure fantasy. Readers patience will be well rewarded in the end, however, and once involved in the story you won't want to put the book down.

Tad Williams is, perhaps, one of the most poetic of the authors I've read. His description of setting is painted in poetry, his use of metaphor superb. The plot is good, gripping; his timing excellent. My only disappointed is in the characters; not in their development but in who the are, and in that they are less than exciting and seemingly lacking in depth. As of yet, I have not become attached to them, in particular the lead character, who seems nothing more than a silly boy caught in a great adventure, which may be all that he is. As this is the first of a trilogy, perhaps that will change as he grows in to his manhood. I certainly hope that to be the case, as I would like to care about his fate and that of his companions. Despite this lack of attachment on my part, this book is beautifully written and I'd highly recommend it.

I say I read this, but by that I mean I got about a third of the way through and it never got any better so I put it down. One of the best things about reading is using my own imagination... Williams left no room for that as he describes every wall, banner, candlestick shoelace, face, doorknob, etc. Every chapter seemed to be 95% description, 5% story.Other reviews say "it's worth the wait" to power through the boring beginning. Give me a break. With a book as thick as my thigh, having so much exposition and an inconsistent hero, I think getting through 1/3 of it was mighty commendable.

Tad Williams is a master fantasy writer, and when exploring the words leading to passages... you wonder how much is fantasy and how much is truth made digestible. Comparing him to Tolkien is akin to comparing Marmite to peanut butter (not bovril!)- you work it out. The Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series is beautiful, tragic, inspiring and multi dimensional.

A pretty good book, that goes a bit up and down. There are periods where you just want to keep reading, and other times where it's a bit of a slog.

This is true of almost all fantasy books, but I feel it was a bit more obvious in this one. However, it does pick up pace very sharply towards the end, and despite a predictable plot, it has left me wanting to read the other books in the series.

I can recommend this book, but I would recommend others more highly.
