While i found this story to be interesting, it is not true. i hate how people think something true and tell other people it is true when the description says fiction. another hint, you find it in the fiction section of your library. i also thought that the book borrowed liberally from "The Crucible" over all a quick interesting, if not original, diversion for the afternoon

I love a good reference to the Salem times as much as anyone, so I have nothing against the sly horror of lies and rebellion and betrayal. And Ms. Rees is certainly if nothing a pretty writer.

Still, it seemed more attempt to make an exciting plot than truly create characterization and terror. A little fluffy while trying to be serious.

Still, it's a worthy read and should be best appreciated by teenagers looking for something with a darker spark.

A great book. It really sucked me in. This was the first book I'd read in such a long time and it made me into a book worm. The story was excellent and the ending made us want more. A really good book!

I really like this book--probably my favorite book by Rees--but the ending is quite abrupt. I know it's meant to be and all, but...it was a little jarring the first time I read this. Still, love this book, and have always loved the cover.

“Witch Child” is written in a diary format. Mary is a young girl living in the 17th century, during a time where religious fervor reigned and witch-hunts were a frequent. As a young girl, Mary witnesses her grandmother’s demise when the town’s people accuse her of being a witch and burn her at the stake. Mary is rescued by a mysterious noble woman, who sends her to the New World so she does not suffer the same fate. Mary takes on her new “pilgrim” life and tries to conform to society’s expectations, but she finds it difficult to suppress her true nature. Mary falls under suspicion when she begins to explore the “dark woods,” makes friends with the native Indians, and is accused by her rivals of being a witch. Overall, I think this is a good book. I think teens will enjoy it. I found the historical details in the story to be accurate. Many of the diary entries were realistic and sometimes shocking when you realize these things actually happened. However, the ending left me a bit unresolved. I felt it ended abruptly. I would have liked the author to expand a little bit more on the events that take place in the last chapter.

I just finished this book. I liked how it was based off a true story of a young girl living in the colonial times. (well i thought it was in true form) the person under me thinks its all fiction. But it says in the beginning of the book that the diary was found in a quilt that she made and that the author did not change much of the story but changed the punctuation and standard writing for the modern reader. I would strongly suggest this book though. It had me going from start to finish

I studyed this book at school and really enjoyed it. All the books I've read by Celia Rees are loads better than Harry Potter and Twilight!

The Mary papers. Diary from Mary Newbury found inside a quilt dating from the colonial time. Forced to flee from England in 1659 after her grandmother was burned as a witch.
The diary describes her subsequent journey to America, and her life in a Puritan settlement.
The book is written as this is a true story, which is not true. It's all fiction.

The Sorceress is the follow up book. Not in diary form, but with a story to surprise us all.

I have it, but can't find it. Definitely worth a read. If I remember correctly at times it seems boring, but carry on reading it. You'll love it. The 2nd isn't what I expected it to be, don't have too high hopes for sourceressOne of the best books I've read. For a while I actually thought it was true! I accidently picked it up and couldn't put it down! About a girl who's grandma is accused of being a witch. She moves to America with the Puritans and moves between Native Americans and the Puritan world.

Great book, easy read and meant for younger audience but still an interesting first person account of the very beginning of the Puritan occupation. The end is not surprising but it leaves you very sympathetic not only toward the main character but also those close to her.
