Young Doctor Barry Laverty has only just begun his assistantship under the eccentric Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly, but he already feels at home in Ballybuckleboo. When the sudden death of a patient cast's a cloud over Barry's reputation, his chances of establishing himself in the village are endangered.

While he anxiously waits for the postmortem results, Barry must regain the trust of the gossipy Ulster village one patient at a time. From a put-upon shopgirl with a mysterious rash to the troubled prgnancy of a young lass who's not quite married yet, Ballybuckleboo provides plenty of cases to keep two country GP's busy.

When a greedy developer sets his sights on the heart of the community-the village pub-it's up to the doctors to save the Black Swan (affectionately known as the "Mucky Duck") from being turned into an overpriced tourist trap. After all, the good citizens of ballybuckleboo need someplace to drink to one another's health.

This author is too much. He has a way of telling a story. You feel like you are in any small town surrounded by all the types of people that live in them. If you are from one, like I am, this book will get you laughing out loud and remembering those people you grew up around.

This is a great book to read during the month of March (St. Patrick's Day). The author writes in such a way as to make you feel a leprechaun is sitting on your shoulder and reading in your ear. :-)

This second in the Irish Country Doctor Series is living up to my expectations after reading the first one. The Ulster County dialect, the colorful Irish characters, and the humor is first-rate!
