THE FIRST AWESOME BOOK I'VE READ IN FOREVER!!! When it says on the front "Sara Douglass has the breadth of vision necessary to create sweeping epics," they weren't kidding. This book itself is enough to keep you enthralled for days (depending on how fast you read) and longer when you read the rest of the series. They say to never judge a book by its cover and the only reason i picked this up at a flea market is because it LOOKED like a good book. And i must be smart cause it was.

At the end of the first book we leave Axis on the bottom of a mountain meeting his long lost father, who can tell him more of his heritage. We also see Faraday still with the big buffoon, which is not always a big buffoon, hes just doing what he grew up being taught if you ask me. This is also where Caelum is "brought" into the picture (but they dont know that.) This is a must read you cant just stop with the first book, they are like pringles you can't stop eating them up.

Prose is unbearable - a mix of rambling run-on sentences and ridiculous imagery. "spot a mouse's burp from a league away" Really? There might be a good story buried in this mess of words but I don't have the patience to find out.

Amazing fantasy story writing. The author creates such images with her writing that I find myself needing to read the rest of the series. The characters are gripping and you really start to care about them and what they feel. Everything flowed so well on a technical level and I find myself sad that I'm done reading it. The story itself had me entrenched once the action started. It was a bit slow and I wondered if I would lose interest, but it totally redeemed itself with the suspense leading to each next chapter. I cried a good many times with along with the characters and I feel better for it. I only wish magic and love like this existed in real life.

A gift, this book both delighted me and irritated me. It was a good read, but it had some horrible stereotypes and had a bad tendency to fall into some of scifi-fantasy's worst pitfalls. The imagery was beautiful, but it lacked some important character development. In the end, the storyline was just too predictable.

The thing I like about this book is how detailed the battle scenes are. Normally things like that in books bore me, but the way Douglass writes, I can really get into it and visualize the battles.
