A very human history of (mostly) post-19th Century Western science. A refreshing layman's digest, packed with little nuggets you didn't know you didn't know. I keep re-reading it, so some of it's bound to get into my brayne on each reading.

Bill is quite simply brilliant, entertaining, enlightening, and funny. His books are a JOY to read, no small feat in a world replete with grim, doom and gloom not forgetting constant fretting and angst. Climb out of your glum with him. Trust you will feel a renewed appreciation for this savage but beautiful little planet we call home.

This was the first Bryson book I read, not being a fan of travel writing, and more into the science bit, I though it was fabulous! answered a lot of things I'd always wanted to know. I then read "life and times the the thunderbolt kid" hilarious, I might even read his travel stuff!!
