First of a three part story. This series is a classic as well as one of my all time favorites. I have read them 6 times. Yes Geeky I know but just something I did. If you have just seen the movies...do yourself a favor and read the books.

i'm sure saying this will probably have a lot of people disgruntled, but i am not a tolkein fan. AT ALL! I read all the books and didn't really like any of them. They're long, drawn out and filled with stuff that easily could have been removed. This is the only time i will ever say this - the movies were better than the books

My dad used to read these to me as a kid. He even did the voices for characters. To this day,the series is one of my favorites.

Well, I didn't quite finish it. This guy is WAY too wordy. The story is good, but drawn out. Needless to say I will not be reading anymore of his books. I think I'll stick to watching the movies.

It was pretty good, actually. Tolkien can get a little too detailed for my liking, but I can definitely see where everyone goes crazy over the story. However, it makes me VERY upset that Tom Bombadil wasn't included in the movies! He was such an amazing character. :)

LOTR is a very good story. Long, but good. I like how it takes like a page to describe Gandalf. Lol. I have read all 3 books and this one was good. the movie did this book justice. Just mad they didn't have Tom Bombadil in it. haha.

I like this book. I was always told that is was a more advance reading level and that it was a difficult read. So not true! Very enjoyable.

This is the perfect book to read after reading the Hobbit...There are several pages were the flow of the events is very slow, it's after leaving the shire, but in the Pracing Pony where Strider (Aragorn) steps in, the book changes and it's hard to stop reading it. I love Tolkien!!!

This entire series is my favorite book of all time. I consider The Lord of the Rings just one book in 3 parts. I cannot imagine another book every bringing me as much joy as this one did.

Tolkien was extremely genius. He's not only written this epic high fantasy novel, but also developed a new language (Sindarin). I am also amazed by the characters he created.Hobbit, elven, dwarf...not to mention Gollum and many more. It needs to go beyond imagination to do this kind of masterpiece. Talk about CRAP. No, dont talk about it, read about it. In this book by the inept JRR 'Im in man-love with my cousin' Tolkien. Ohhh where did he lose me.... maybe the first 60 pages of background on hobbits? God, if theres one thing I need its to know more about hairy footed midgets.. OHH what did they smoke?!?! do tell!! no wait, Plz god dont tell me. If an author has to give me background its because he isnt talented enough to place it into the story. STRIKE ONE. No... its okay.. Ill push on.. this is a CLASSIC! Sentence one of the story (FINALLY) "Bilbo Baggins lived on bags end of Hobbiton." OMFG are you kidding me? bilbo baggins? bags end? hobbiton? Is this supposed to be literature or sesame street?? well, neither because neither would contain this ridiculously amateur sentence. STRIKE TWO. (thats probably not the sentence but its pretty close, theres no way im enduring that horror again just to quote it correctly. sorry) NO! must push on! common tolkien! your the king, i mean all the fantasy Ive read is crap compared to yours! right?! right?! and some where close to sentence one... he was eleventy one years old. STRIKE THREE your fire fodder tolkien, take your gay midget love and use it for your cousin. Im not reading about a weak hairy hero whose ineptness is only matched by his closeness to the ground. WTH are people thinking with this garbage? There are some great books out there.. go find them.

Long-overdue start of the series..was in a read book watch movie bash movie phase.. realized for the first time that the movie was better than the book..told the story well, removing boring parts and pacing it right, but well the source of the material has to be appreciated..taking away 1 star for the long and boring songs

I've been reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy at least once a year for seventeen years. I'm always finding some new little detail that makes the story even richer. One of the best books of the 20th century.

I had resisted reading this series from remarks gleaned from others about too many names, too long and detailed, yet I thought I'd start them anyway since they were in our library. What I found is so much more than the films, so rich in detail and phrasing, that it is like stepping into another world altogether. From social interaction in greater detail than we would ever use today, to medievel concerns and dress, it is a fascinating journey that I am delighted to take.

Very good, although, at some points you do have to trudge through history and description to get back to an actual story line. The book is still good, although the movie helps make things more visual. That way you aren't lost in the twisting and broiling over descriptions.

Anyone says that the movies are preferrable to this needs to learn how to read (that said, I'm a huge of the movies--they are cinematic masterpieces). But this is classic fantasy at its best. Every other fantasy author to come along, as great as they are, still have not managed to create the depth of what Tolkien created. Stemming from the world he created for "The Hobbit", Tolkien writes a truly epic story of good vs evil, friendship, and loyalty. All simple, wonderful themes that speak to us whether we live in Middle-Earth or the real world. He has managed to great an entire culture that the reader finds himself caring for, a world that needs to be protected at all costs. Tolkien is a master of plot. While the story isn't unnecessarily complex, it is broad and you have to hand it for him for juggling so much. The characters even more so are wonderful. They are flawed, but at the same time properly heroic. "The Fellowship of the Ring" is an excellent beginning to a classic trilogy.
