Very good, gives you great insight into how deaf people perceive the world when they are still learning the sign language and lip reading. Excellent written, easy to read and in a interesting setting (just before and during WWI).
So far, so good. Very interesting to learn about how deaf people receive being deaf.

The most enjoyable account of what it was like to be living in Canada during WWI that I have read. Located in S ON on the Bay of Quinte, it was easy to imagine the sights and the sounds. When the story moved to the trenches, it was all too easy to envision; the reader is in the mud with the characters. I love Can Lit and Frances Itani is now a favourite.

two books in one - the first part you gain appreciation of losing ones' hearing and get a glimpse of what how changed life would be wiout this sense then the book takes a turn and focuses on what it would be like to be a soldier at war... really throws you into the shoes of the characters

Although it took me a little while to really get into the book, I thoroughly enjoyed it once I was hooked! Frances Itani's raw and brutal descriptions of life in the battles of World War I were unforgettable. I was also fascinated by the way she interwove the deafening silence of Grania's world with the deafening chaos of Jim's world. The novel captured the tragedy of a time when war turned vibrant young men and women into broken survivors who would never be whole again.

I thought this was a truly incredible book and I admire the author's skill. The details she added, the style with which she wrote and whatever little extra things she threw in there, made me feel not only like I could relate with Grania, but that i was Grania. For the time I read that book, i truly felt like i could understand what it was to be surrounded by silence, yet hear every little word all at the same time. It was definately worth the time it takes to get through it.

So far so good. It has no trashy love scenes or bad language. It is fairly easy to read. And it really describes the life of a girl who has gone deaf and has to live with the memory of sound.

This is a really interesting book with wonderful descriptions of the senses. It also has strong characters who are unusual: Grania, the main protagonist, is deaf, and her husband Jim volunteers to work in the medical core as a stretcher bearer, rather than as a soldier, which is a field not often portrayed in books. I really enjoyed reading this book and believe it is worth a look as the subject matter of war is approached in a bold and fresh way. It is also a beautiful love story.

I think if I never read a book that has anything to due with WWI, I will be ok w/that. I thought that the subject of this book - a girl who is struck deaf at the age of 5 after having Scarlet Fever, would be overshadowing the parts about WWI, but I found that it had more description of the battlefield, men being blown to bits, mustard gas, etc., than I wanted to read about. And, to be honest, I'm not sure how it contributed to the book. I found the beginning parts that dealt with Grania's story of being deaf and trying to learn communication was new and interesting to me, even if a bit tedious at times. I felt the whole second part of the book was a disapointment.
