The master of judicious dialogue. This is the second play I have read of Harold Pinter who had recently passed away, and I understood finally why Harold Pinter was so great. I love the sexuality in his plays, and strangely feministic way a woman is portrayed despite the fact that she is always being degraded in some way. That is how I see his female character anyways - erect, hard and powerful, playing with the men. The homecoming starts off ordinarily as many Harold Pinter's plays often do, but then degenerates into something sinister and so much more interesting. I read Ruth throughout the whole play out aloud, and I wished I could play her. I wish I could watch this play on stage.

A shocking, no-holds-barred status-seeking melee. Ranks with Betrayal and One for the Road as one of Pinter's best.

This Pinter guy is a genius, of course. But he's also a very deep guy.

Neither as weird as 'The Birthday Party' nor as traditionally structured as 'Betrayal,' 'The Homecoming' combines Pinter's characteristic absurdism with more of a plot than one usually finds in his plays. The result is a deeply disturbing play that is devastatingly effective -- my first reaction after reading it was that I wanted to go take a shower. The play is darkly sexual and indeed at times outright horrifying, but worth a read.
