Very interesting, but there were times when I just wanted her to get on with the story rather than the history lesson.

A true story worded into a victorian detective novel or tries to anyway.

A horrid murder of a 3 yr old child takes place in a middle-class victorian family during 1860 and what's more it seems to an insider was the killer. The local police force have decided who the killer is but dont keep an accurate record, a famous and clever detective from london is called in to find the local police unwilling to help.

The story follows jack whicher and his investigation into the murder as well as the "hysteria" it causes in a nation.

This book started off fantastically describing the murder and gives the reader a good insight into the family as well as D.I. Whicher. It also brings in history of the detective side of the police force is a good read. However i found after the murder and whicher's involvement the book seems to lose pace and interest. I really struggled with this book from half way through.

Fascinating! For any lover of detective fiction, or even interested in Victorian times. Learned loads about the origins of the police and detectives, detective fiction, Victorian society. And written in a very interesting, non-boring way... Highly recommend.

I read this expecting it to be in the form of a novel largely based on the actual characters and events with extra details and dialogue added by the author. In fact it is a 'biography' of the murder mystery which captured the attention of the mid-Victorian public: the brutal murder of 3 year old Saville Kent. The book gives an insight into the society, attitudes and policing of the period with Jack Whicher as the 'Inspector Morse' of the tale (Detective Whicher also appeared as a private investigator in another high profile case - that of the Tichborne Claimant.) Apparently Wilkie Collins 'The Moonstone' was inspired by the tale.
The book covers the background of the Kent family who live at Road House in Wiltshire, the discovery of 3 year Saville in the water closet and the ongoing investigations and trials which followed. Without wishing to spoil the story, it doesn't have a tidy ending and to that extent is a little unsatisfying. In fact although I am a big fan of detective and crime fiction I didn't enjoy this book as much as I'd hoped.

Fascinating history. I did find some conflict between the telling of the story of the investigation, which would not have taken very long, and the detailed research into the background of the investigators, the origins of the methodology and the terminology, which was interesting and informative but slowed down the narrative.
