I first read THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES at the time I was getting divorced from my Chinese-American wife whose family was personal friends of Amy Tan's family, and this may have caused me to underappreciate this book at the time. Going back and rereading it opened my eyes.

THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES is the story of Chinese-born Kwan and her American-born half Asian stepsister Olivia, who also serves as the narrator of the book. Olivia Liguni is in San Francisco, an accomplished American separated from her Anglo husband and in doubt about her own life and embarrassed of her sister's uneducated Chinese manner. Kwan Li ins her pigeon English convinces Olivia to travel to China to connect to her heritage and the family she has barely known. Kwan tells Olivia she believes in a past life she was a one-eyed girl in 19th Century Manchu China and that she can see and talk to ghosts with her "yin eyes." The story reveals a number of amazing family secrets and brings Olivia and Kwan together in unexpected and life-affirming ways. The story is at the same time sprawling, magical and intimate, and shows Tan coming into her full power as a writer.

I always find Amy Tan's books to be so satisfying. If you like her other books, you will like this one too.

I really liked this book but I found the end sadder than the other Tan novels I have read.

Very good, but a little confusing and disjointed due to the constant transitioning between lives.

I've really enjoyed Amy Tan's books in the past, and although this wasn't my favorite story of hers it was still entertaining and worthwhile. Told in a first-person narrative, it's a tale of sisters, marriage, the power of the past, and most of all - ghosts.

Tan is a master story-teller. This book had me laughing out loud and believing in ghosts and reincarnation.
