This is a must-read for anyone working at a midwestern university. And for anyone considering a move to such an institution. I promise that you will recognize and re-name the characters and laugh yourself silly.

I wouldn't call this book "uproariously" funny, as the New York Times allegedly did. It is sort of like a good movie--nice, but not particularly profound... This isn't the kind of book that makes me want to go out and stalk around looking for more of the author's work.

The longer I work at a big land-grant state university in the Midwest...one with the initials M.U., no less, the funnier (and at some points, sadder) this book becomes...from soooo many angles.

Direct, engaging writing style with excellent use of language. Delves into the complexities of human emotion and motives, including the sometimes dark and twisted side. A great read.

A funny parody of the pretensions of academia. Very well written and presents and interesting way of telling a story through a series of vignettes.

Hilarious, and dead-on! Smiley captures all the quirks and characters of a college campus and town perfectly.
Read this one a few years back, more than once, and laughed out loud all the way through. She captures all the quirks of a large college campus perfectly.

i read the first half of this book, and I have to say...of the first 200 pages or so, only about 10 to 15 of them were actually interesting. I hate quitting books, but I just can't justify the time, reading about characters and situations I care nothing at all about.

I met Jane Smiley while she was an English Professor at Iowa State University. ISU is the where this book plays out. It is outrageously funny and a great depiction of the spirit that prevails at ISU

A giant pig named Earl Butz lies hidden in an overlooked lab at a Midwestern college (probably Missouri University, hence the title 'Moo') where scientists try to discern just how much the poor critter can eat.

This was probably a much better read during the Reagan years of the late '80s (when Earl Butz was Sec'y of Ag.). The characters, who would be implausible in any other novel, have a ring of truth because they're nutjobs from academe--a campus secretary who secretly controls campus finances and job promotions, the lone Marxist who refers to himself as Chairman X, and a clueless college president round out a cast of suspects who will be familiar to anybody who has spent more than a semester on a campus.

Moo is otherwise another pedestrian novel cranked out by that breed of bloodless author known as the Academic Fiction Writer.

Didn't finish. Too much going on that seemed unrelated. I'm sure (I hope) that it does all come together but it took too long and I gave up.

Having worked in a small university and knowing first hand about the scandals that go on behind the scenes in these places, this is the funniest and most frighteningly accurate portrayal of academic politics I've ever seen. There is so much truth to administrative assistants who are the real power behind the curtain, outrageous affairs between professors, as well as the isolation that so many students feel even in a socially crowded environment.

Good fun and a quick read. There is a shop on campus now that we refer to as "Old Meats" in honor of this book.

Pretty funny and a nice easy read. The characters seem to be based on people I know and I'm betting that, if you work in an institution of higher learning, you will recognize them, too! (Well, maybe not Earl Butz). I'm glad I read it and could recommend it to anyone who has been to college and especially if you have worked at one.

Loved this. It is very visual and Smiley did a great job with a lot of characters, giving them all disctinct, 3-dimensional descriptions. If no one has adapted this for the screen yet, it is a great project.
An accurate description of the quirky nature of university life.
