The final book in the Chronicles of Prydain series, written by Lloyd Alexander a couple of years before I was born. If you want to understand me, reading this series is part of the project.

Really I like the whole series. You can't read just one, but the High King is probably the best of them.

I’ve tried to read this series a dozen times and I’ve always given up until now. This time I started with the last book in the series and I couldn’t put the book down. The author assures the reader in the introduction that though this is the final book in his series it is a stand alone; I found this to be so. The characters are slowly led on the stage, with their past exploits clearly delineated. I never felt unclear or confused. I grew to love all the characters, even the whiny Glew and the shifty Achren. The author, without revealing any of the clever twists of the plot, brings everything to a firm, though not always happy, conclusion.

Read The High King and all the Chronicles of Prydain as a middle schooler and on occasion reread! One of the books that inspired my love of epic fantasy fiction.

At first, I thought, "Argghh! Another book with magic and creatures and battles! I don't think I can take it!" Then, I got halfway through, and thought, "Whoa... This is different." By the end, I was hooked. This is the kind of book you want to read again and again.

Great book. The whole series is awesome, and it definitely needs to be read together. The ending is not what you'd expect.

The final battle, final stands, enemies revealed, and bittersweet victories. A classic, and the last book in the Prydain Chronicles. This one isn't so much about growing up, something you see quite a bit in the other stories in the series, as it is about being a grown up and realizing that there's always more. Every loss and victory in this book is made by adults, even those characters we met as children, fighting with all the experience and power they have gathered against the last press of the ultimate evil.

Won a Newbery Medal. 'Nuff said. If you read the series all the way through (this is the last of 5), you will have experienced a growth along with the characters... I cried at the end each time I read this one.

Alexander's writing style is slightly different in this book from the other four. We get to see more into several of the supporting characters'. It leaves you wanting more of the series.

Not my favorite in the series. And if you had any doubt before that this story was a knockoff of LOTR, this book certainly proved that it is. But it's still a good story, and a bittersweet conclusion. I wish to read more the side stories surrounding other characters. And I wish the book had gone longer because there seemed so much more to tell. And the end battle could have been longer. Overall, a good ending to a great series.

This book reads very similar to "Lord of the Rings," and yet there are also unique story threads and characters interwoven through out. Both works seem to draw from Welsh folklore, but "The High King" is not the detailed in depth history and culture study that Tolkien's work is written to be. "The High King" proves to be an emotive as well as right and satisfying conclusion to the development of the man who is Taran. This story, however, like "Lord of the Rings," is flavored bittersweet - a taste unlike any of the other Prydain Chronicles.

Whenever I need to have a good cry, I pick up this book and read the last chapter, which by the way can be embarassing when in the middle of a busy bookstore. The last few pages bring back all the memories of the previous 4 books - the characters that have been lost and those that are new friends. The most amazing piece to me is the choice that is made at the end and the strength it takes to make that choice. The beauty in that choice and the journey that led to that choice. It's not an end, but a beginning.

all 5 books from the Chronicles of Prydain are fabulous! I love the characters and the manner in which the tales draw the reader in and invite them to become engaged in the story.

Several things to say ... this book is simply amazing. The Chronicles of Prydain, if you read in full, will keep you glued page to page, book to book. I've spent a whole week and about $50 to finish the series. This is how addicting this is - definitely a good read and way to go Lloyd :)
