It seems to me that many contemporary American writers are dully gesturing at the vision of modern life Benjamin posited quite some time ago. Personally, I prefer his compact, enigmatic essays to all the sentence fragments in the land.

Benjamin is also the most humble critic I have encountered. He actually seems to like books.

I'm kind of always reading this book. I was first drawn into his world by an essay he wrote on book collecting. His words, to me, illustrate a very strong adherance to his own code of living, a beautiful, illuminating mind that was ended all too soon in this world.

I was truly touched by Benjamin's attempt to wrestle his delicate aesthetic into the project of revolution.

Walter Benjamin is someone I pick up and read whenever I feel like pondering something, giving my mind something to work at. His writings are wonderful and thought-provoking. I was introduced to him while writing a paper on the falseness of manufacturing, advertising, and consumerism, and continued to read his works long after the paper was written. I have his book "Reflections," which is also full of great essays.

What is great about Walter Benjamin is that he successfully combines a great reflexion on modern society and a beautiful poetic style.

Walter Benjamin was a German Jew and Communist who sought to deconstruct normative views of culture, politics, and economics. He thought his method would instill a self-critical perspective in theory that would dissolve any cultic control over value while remaining open to critique.

As Wikipedia so deftly describes, "For Benjamin, the politicization of art should be the goal of Communism; in contrast to Fascism which aestheticized politics for the purpose of social control."

Not an easy read, Benjamin may not be all that accessible. Which is a shame. His works on aesthetics, Marxism, and Platonism is still very relevant today.
