Kafka intuitively understood Modernity. The Trial is evidence to that astounding understanding of the alienation, and isolation that Modernity reproduces, both in it's bureaucracies, and in it's shallowness and inability to recognize itself. It is tragic, that Kafka also understood himself through the lens of Modernity. The book itself is highly intelligent, filled with subtle philosophical wisdom that is lost on all but those who are truly seeking it. The exacting imagination of the book is an affirmation that Kafka is perhaps one of the greatest visionary writers in fiction since the days of the German Romanticism in the early 19th and late 18th centuries.

Pure bureaucracy - the arguments are circular, leaving you confused and frustrated, like Josef K. Slighty disjointed, particularly at the end, as it was put together after Kafka's death by his friend Max Brod, but brilliant nonetheless. A one-time reader though.

Great book..."In The Cathedral" is the best chapter of the book...probably one of the best I have read in recent times...3 star for the book and additional .5 for the chapter ... pity Kafka didnt complete it (like his others) ... there are so many questions unanswered...may be he wanted it to be incomplete...but still a great book to read...

An incomplete novel, in which the symbolism presents a more deeper, disturbing hidden meaning. Various interpretations exist. I myself feel that Joseph K. ruled himself as guilty, and succumb to his own consciousness of it.
