This was a great book. If you liked Ender's Game, I strongly recommend Xenocide.

I have a slight bit of OCD myself, but it never bothered me. Looking at how it affects the "Godspoken," though, shows me how much worse it could be.

Talkier than the first two books, Xenocide brims with ethical and philosophical dilemmas; and psychological, physical and metaphysical speculation. Plot-wise, the resolution is somewhat of a cheat, but the consequences are quite intriguing.

My personal favorite book of the Ender Wiggins Saga. I am not much of a sci-fi fan. I read Ender's Game at the insistence of my little brother who, like most boys, loved it. Truly not my favorite but eventually I would read through the series and the amazing characters and plot in this third book truly inspired me. Although it did not really change my opinion of the genre I gained a respect for the author and am now an Orson Scott Card fan.

I've heard the comment made about this book that posits the idea that Qing-jao is a bit irritating in this book and I have to agree. I still think the writing is amazing but I can't help compare it to Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead. In each of those stories I was completely involved with all of the characters most of the time. I also got a little tired of the big questions. Very important to ask those questions but I can only take so much back and forth on a subject. I think for now I might skip to the shadow series, starting with Ender's Shadow.

Excellent writing as usual. But, this book sets out to resolve the unresolved conflicts from Speaker for the Dead and still requires a sequel (Children of the Mind) to do it.

Rather than many little dilemmas and character development, this book is many characters all working on the same problem from varying angles. Still interesting but it's too ambitious for it's own good (Card himself admits in the intro for Speaker that he never meant to write a 3rd book, let alone a 4th) and those who are less invested in the story may find themselves losing interest. I've seen the story through this far, though, and I definitely enjoyed it enough to want to read #4.

The first two were better. Ok read, but did not inspire me to want to read the 4th book.

I started this book feeling the same way I had felt with the previous two- why am I reading this? ugh. But at some point, it changed and, just like with the others- I really was enjoying it and finding it fascinating and being sad that I had finished it.

Obviously, some of the main thoughts were of a more ethical nature-- how can a species/race decide to kill another? how do you decide or weigh this decision? Are the decolda more valuable than people or piggies? Or vice versa? Who makes that decision? And what is life? Is AI 'alive'? What makes sacrifise valuable? All good questions to discuss I guess.

Some other random comments:
1. It made me wish I had studied physics and that I naturally thought in a more scientific way. I know it's fiction, but I wanted to better understand all the physics and stuff behind all of the ideas of inside/outside/philotes.

2. I find the hive queen fascinating. I'm still not sure why- I know that I would have been masively freaked out to see her in real life, but somehow the whole idea of calling buggers to life, the way she could see her view and other workers' views through the multiple lenses at the same time, and how they talked/thought was just fascinating. I enjoyed reading about her interactions a lot more than I enjoyed the interactions with Qing Jiao.

3. Qing Jiao annoyed me. Maybe it's because I had suspicions about what might happen with her early on, but I guess I wanted her to 'get it.' I probably should have more sympathy for her-- it would have been a HUGE worldview shift- difficult. But instead, I just found myself impatient and irritated with her. HOWEVER it did raise some interesting questions about reality- how do we know what is real? especially with spiritual things? what they thought were the gods was simply genetically altered OCD genes... my experience of 'God' is so subjective.. how do I know its real and not just helpful psychology or my imagination? you can't truly.

4. So I'm debating about reading 'Children of the Mind' or not. I know it will be a let down, but part of me wants to know how to the story will end. And part of me doesn't- I don't want to know that Ender joins Novihna in the convent place, but still want closure to the story I guess. So I guess I will have to see once I am looking at the book in the bookstore/library.
