This was a good book, but I didn't like it very much. There was too much stuff going on, and yet the plot felt essentially simple because the presentation was so very episodic. It was kind of like reading MTV cutting.

Vinge's second space opera. It gives a whole new meaning to "human resources." I'll never look at an MRI machine the same again.

Advanced sci-fi on an epic scale. Epic gets tossed around a lot these days, but it applies to this and Vinge's other works. The story spans thousands of light years where billions of lives are lost in an instant. The most innovative feature of Vinge's works is his concept of the technological singularity and he applies it to physical space in this novel. The further out from the center of the galaxy, the more complex technology can get. This has several interesting consequences that play out over the 500+ pages. A must read for sci-fi afficionados.

This was my first Vinge experience and it almost turned me off to his other books.

I've often seen him billed as a hard sci-fi author; this novel's intelligent topiaries, gratuitous FTL, and deus ex machina (literally) ending made me think it was anything but.

Similarly, Vinge has been praised for his alien psychologies. The Tine aliens have interesting swarm intelligence, but they still live in an essentially human feudal society. What gives?

This book was far surpassed by its loose prequel, A Deepness in the Sky.

Not typically a fan of "spaceship books," but the story and characters here just blew me away. An unrecognized classic of SF.
