A well-written alternative history with at dash of mysticism and magic. The concept and settings are well drawn and I personally don't think that there is anything wrong with a moral hero. One problem was the climax and ending which needed some toning down as it bordered on the ridiculous. Worth the read - but not a must read now!

Told of prophet to end the war. Tells of his rise and what he accomplishes. A magic and reality book that is fun to read and wishing it true.

Very different from the first book in that it goes in to the world of the "red man." I found it interesting but I probably won't continue the series.

The characters are much more likable in this second book. More of the magic is explained and big things actually happen this time.

Entretienido y emocionante de principio a fin. Scott Card reinterpreta el conflicto entre pieles rojas y colonos con su don para entrelazar las vidas de los personages en un tapiz extraodinario.

A tale that weaves history and magical realism. History is a heavy subject for me but this book was motivation enough to read and polish my knowledge about some cool facts lost in my memory. Cool book.

This is the second book in Card's Alvin Maker series. The story continues the saga of Alvin Jr., who finds himself, along with his brother, captured by a band of renegade Indians doing the bidding of William Henry Harrison who is bent on starting a White Man - Indian war. Alvin and his brother are rescued by the prophet Tenska-tawa, an Indian desperately trying to find a way to peace between the Red Man and the White Man. Alvin is sent by the prophet with Takumsaw, a warrior and the prophet's brother, who is dedicated to raising an army of Indians to drive out the White Man once and for all. Alvin hones his special powers as he learns of the Indians' spiritual relationship with the land they live on and the respect with which they treat it. Overall, a very good read and better than the first book in the series.

O.S.C confuses me no end the way he blasphemously creates Gods or proves them to be evil, and thier servants morons. But as long as I refrain from reading his articles posted on his Ornery american web site I love the guy ! But as soon as I see his more contemporary political views I want him beaten with agreat big stick.

Love this series. Amazingly well written. But it simply never ends!! Once I finished book 3 with no end in sight, and he was still working on book 7 or 8 ... I simply couldn't convince myself to keep going.

Card's incredible reimagining of frontier America takes an amazing and touching turn into the world of Native Americans. Not only is the imagination and the folksy feel great, but Card manages to get inside the heads of his characters like no one else.

It's a spellbinding story of a folksy fontier, magic, and the passion of the human spirit and psychology.

(Listened to via Audio Book) This book was a good continuation. Card spent a lot of time reconstructing the plight and difficulties of Native Americans in this novel. It really resonated with me and showed the true nature of humanity. On one hand, we can be quite loving and cordial. On another, we can be so vile to people we don't understand.

The back-story is a bit complicated still and I really don't see where Card is going, but I am curious of what will become of the forces against Alvin.

I enjoyed the first book, Seventh Son a lot. This one was a tougher read, not 'PC'. However, most books need 'bad things' to happen in order for lessons to be learned.

Whle Card is an excellent writer and his plots are intrigueing, his characters feel two dimensional, static, and sometimes overdone. I am speaking in terms of the entire series here: Calvin is altogether too childish, Alvin is altogether too moral, in short they are simply too exaggerated to be believable. Fantasy books like this draw their power from the intricacies of their plots and the depth of their characters, and Card has fallen a bit short of excellent with this series.
