My first exposure to Orson Scott Card, and a good one. Card's writing is wonderful and imaginative and the world that he has built -- a look far into humanity's future -- is intriguing. He gives the reader a slow introduction to the world and, by the end of this book, I couldn't help but to want to know more. Excellent read! (Part of me thinks that this could be related to the Ender series, far far in the future after the Speaker books. Perhaps Card doesn't mean it this way, but I could see the connection.)

A really enjoyable read that excels that both world-building and story-telling. Hope to read the rest of what could be an equally excellent series in due course.

Good, but not his best work. I have certain issues with the utopia he's constructed but that's a personal thing. It's a good book. I'll probably read the whole series eventually but I'm not jumping out of my skin to do so.

I HATE that Card stole almost the entire plot and characters from The Book of Mormon. Using what many believe to be true as a basis for fiction just rubs me the wrong way.

Give you an interesting outlook and a society. He turns the tables and creates a Matriarical society with men in traditional women's roles. Again dealing with powerful societial issues in good story.

I enjoyed the book very much. The character development was great and the overall plot was very interesting. I find the cultures and their faiths to be quite imaginative. The God figure that the Oversoul represents is very interesting indeed and I look forward to seeing how this all pans out. The ending was okay, but I personally believe that Card finds it hard to really end a book when they are part of a larger saga as this one is.

The Memory of Earth is a highly enjoyable read. The characters and the culture OSC has developed is fantastic and intriguing. He keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen, and your guesses are almost never right, but are nearly always far more creative and interesting than what you had thought of. However, the book suffers a little from the fairly abrupt ending that skirts several of the story arcs and ignores a few. The book's ending makes it obvious that it is obviously part of a series. It almost appears to be a prequel intended to fill in back story for a series already out there (having not read the rest of the series, I cannot attest to if that is the case). All and all it is a good read and well worth the time spent even if it doesn't reach the extremely high standard OSC sets with some of his other books.

This book was great! It really provokes the reader to consider ideas of free will and human ability. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

I am interested in seeing where the "memory of earth" happens to take the characters. They are not my favorite of OSC, but all four brothers are interesting in their own ways. I will have to pick up the second book.

This book is definitely more proof of Card's deep interest in spiritual themes and how the future will impact humanity's spirituality. The book provides an analogy of Christian theism (and possibly other points of view) and provides a believable semi-deity in a super-intelligent and omniscient (as far as human thought on the planet Harmony is concerned) computer.

Few Science Fiction authors have such a deep understanding of the importance of spirituality to the way people think as Card. This book is excellent.

P.S., I disagree with Tyler, the last book is also excellent, especially in it's analog of Hell, though Heaven isn't really revealed, but that sticks with Card's style.

A great read. It shows how great scifi can truly be even when you mix in aspects such as faith and God in a story, something many other scifi writers don't get into. Although I don't agree with his mormon views, he's still a fantastic author.
