Good read, but at times it seems like Jules Verne is documenting all the nautical knowledge that was known at the time the book was published. There are a lot of lists of sea creatures and vessels, etc. It did leave me wanting to read The Mysterious Island, so that may be next on the list.

Jules has some interesting predictions on the inventions of the 20th century, but his writing is dreadful at times. His characters are one dimensional and all the scientific facts and figures, while accurate, are horribly boring and interrupt the flow of the novel. Also, nothing really interesting happens in the book, they just float around the sea looking at things and occasionally fighting sharks and whales. Maybe it doesn't even deserve 3 stars. I'm sure the children's version must be better, they usually cut out all the unnecessary details.

Jules Verne was truly a man before his time. I don't think that I have ever been disappointed by his books. This is probably the 200th time reading this classic, and I will definitely read it again in the future. HIGH RECOMMEND.

What was for its time a showy catalog of a Naturalist never at a loss is by today's standards a tedious academic exercise occasionally broken up by some half-hearted stabs at characterization. Deeply disappointing.

wow! what a great book. Interesting from a historical perspective as we now know a lot more about what goes on under the sea than in JVs time but the guy was clearly very well read and very knowledgeable. Great story with a galloping pace through the submarine world of the taciturn Captain Nemo.

A classic! in every sense

Just returned to Jules Verne for no particular reason, and this book is kinda awesome. It moves fast and it never seems old and musty, and Nemo is one of the truly great antiheroes.

Also it's fun when the characters talk about science to each other because whenever Verne didn't know something he would just make shit up.

I really had a good time with this.

Captian Nemo is like a cross between the Doctor and the Phantom of the Opera. One of the best scifi books I've ever read.

If you took out all the long, long lists of sea creatures, I might have enjoyed this book more. It was interesting, but I got so bored reading descriptions of every sea creature imaginable, and how they are classified.

Hmm...I read this book and I was torn. Was it one of my favorites or simply a bore that I'm forced to respect due to my love of the disney rendition of the story? It turns out that I do indeed enjoy this piece. The classic style of old sci-fi, with elaborate scientific explanations of the inner workings of the submarine, are great and a bit frightening..much of what jules verne spoke of has been made possible by science in the last hundred years. Although the long explanations of underwater life and the repeated phrases ("That is all well and good", etc, etc.) made me skim at times, it's still worth it for those who want to be marine biologists as well as sci fi heads.

It wasn't bad for a book that aims to engage people in the beauty of marine life, and the 'tortured soul' complex. I liked the idea of living like a hermit underwater. It was alot better than I thought it was going to be like Moby Dick where a man chasing after a whale but with a giant squid (yes, I judged by cover). I guess if it was written in the 1800s, it measures quite comparatively as a good book, but to read in the 21st century, it does feel rather one-dimensional. It would've been cooler if Captain Nemo was a bit more weird or something, and if they tried to escape a first time with no success to unleash the 'wrath of crazy Captain Nemo'.Ok, I'm being a bit of an idiot nowwww...

I can't believe I read this book in Jr. High. The taxanomic and geographical details are daunting even now. However, the vision that allows a man to imagine submarines and the discovery of the South Pole in the 19th century. Verne has accomplished something better though. He has confined his entire narrative to four characters. Certainly two are rather shallow, but Nemo is so complex he aspires to rival Ahab of Moby Dick.

The most impressive feature of the novel is the sense of wonder. Verne was enamoured with travel and Prof. Arronax is too. He serves as Verne's own voice in his constant surprise at an intimate and different view even of subjects he already knows. He is not satisfied till he explores the entire Earth's waters. The beauty and diversity of life and geology unfolds for the reader in more detail than most may be able to absorb, but what it lacks in accessibility it makes up for in enthusiasm.

Verne's Voyages Extrordinaire formed my first introduction to adventure tales and real Science Fiction. 20,000 Leagues may be tedious in places, but it is engaging enough to draw in the reader and change the course of his reading.

It was a fun read, but there were perhaps too many pages describing thew fish they encountered. Maybe that was interesting when the book was written...

It dawned on me a few years ago that I had never read Jules Verne, so his most famous book was a good start. Considering this was written in the 1800s, it is amazing. The research that went into this book is incredible, and it's awe-inspiring to realize what people knew back then. To people who read it then, it must have been impressive. I was bored by the amount of detail in the book and found myself scanning the pages after awhile. Verne was brilliant, but his characters seem secondary compared to his research and story concept. I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

If you have never read Jules Verne - start here! This is an amazing book, and no film has quite got it right. The amazing Nautilus takes on finding all kinds of unknown things - including Squid Battles, journeys under the ice to an ocean at one of the poles, angry native tribes and a slightly twitchy Canadian whaler..

Good book, excellent for its time, but by today's standards I feel that more could have been done with plot and characters. Additionally, while obviously and impressively knowledgeable, I do feel that Verne goes on a little bit too much about marine life, and especially the different classifications. I know that the story is told from the viewpoint of a naturalist (Professor Aronnax), but the classifications go a little over the top for my liking.

If you can understand Verne's rhetoric, then it's actually pretty entertaining. But, bear in mind, he writes from a time BEFORE any of the technology he describes was even available, when the depths of the ocean were completely untouched by human exploration.

A wonderful piece of writing. Jules Verne did not only depict fiction in this piece but also things that later in time became realities such as the existence of submarines, the existence of large trees and marine life underwater (which at the time were unknown), the use of diving suits at extremely deep distances under the sea... The reader's imagination does travel deep down the blue waters and is soon captivated by a sureal adventure.
