Different than what I expected, but very interesting and excellent structure to the story. I really enjoy the political spin on science fiction and how itincorporates into modern politics as well as futuristic politics. Worth reading, but only if you have read Ender's Shadow, or you will be beyond lost.

A worthy sequel to "Ender's Shadow," just not stellar.

This tale is set after Ender wins the battle with the Formics and describes events between Ender's jeesh, other Battle School kids and world politics. Looking forward to reading the next in this series.

The ending is a bit anti-climatic for me. But still, a good read; Card still didn't fail to keep you turning those pages in a large portion of the book.

Now, the Earth is the Children's playground.

3.5/5. Interesting political and military story, but not as SF as I was hoping.

I loved the politics in this book, and how Earth takes complete advantage of the Battle School children.

If you're a fan of the Ender series, and especially the characters Bean and Petra, this is a great read. Personally I loved Bean more than almost anyone so I enjoyed it immensely.

It is however a big departure from the events of Battle School and Eros you've read in Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, and the pace of those books can never be recreated. It does translate nicely into the more global (literally) scale and is worth the time for a fan of the series.

Really good. It's got political intrigue, human strategy, psychology, and great understanding of human nature and characterization. Very moving.

This book was enjoyable, but the logical leaps the characters have to make on a regular basis to keep the story moving becomes tiring and slightly implausible. Although the kids are 'geniuses,' it comes off as lazy storytelling. That being said, the novel is engaging and brings up some interesting ideas.

Card goes earthside for the latest update on the battle school grads and Ender Wiggins' family. This book is quite different from the trilogy that followed Ender after his exile, and a very engrossing listen.

Card has an interesting habit of paying attention to details leading up to and following big events, but dealing with those big happenings almost as an afterthought. I'm eager to continue listening to these audiobooks.

While not as great as I hoped, but Card sets the bar very high with his other works. This book is well worth the time invested. The big difference about this book is that it does not engage in a blatant moral issue the way we've come to expect of OSC. This work is the play of world politics and power playing once the gloves come off. A good read, but it lacks the profundity I hoped for. Do not shy away from the book because it isn't a home run; triples and doubles in the majors are more than the average batter can hope for. Card delivers on the entertainment and maneuver front. While not as great as I hoped, but Card sets the bar very high with his other works. This book is well worth the time invested.  Bad people wanted to take over the world, and they'd have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling child prodigies. That's the basic plot of Shadow of the Hegemon, which I think counts as the second book in the Bean series, which is related to Ender's Game, and has something to do with the Speaker for the Dead series that I haven't read yet. Or something.
This time around, instead of being in Ender's shadow--Ender's flown away to outer space--Bean's shadowing Ender's older brother, Peter. As you can guess from the title, Pete's on his way to becoming Hegemon. Bean allies himself with Peter because the other guy who might end up ruling the world is Bean's old nemesis, Achilles.
You remember Achilles, don't you? He's Bean's own personal Peter. Just as Bean and Ender are damn near the same character, so are Achilles and Peter. And when you consider that Ender and Peter (and, by association, Bean and Achilles) share a lot of similarities, things get really confusing when you need to remember continuity stuff from previous books. The fact that Card's basically dealing with one character, of whom four different people represent variations, is at the same time fascinating and really damned annoying.
We also get to see some other old favorites, like Graff and Sister Carlotta, as well as a whole bunch of Battle School kids, some of whom might have shown up in previous books--to be quite honest, I don't remember. The other main character, though (aside from Bean, Peter, and Achilles), is Petra, who I do remember from the previous books. She's essentially the damsel in distress this time around, but not in an annoying way--in fact, she's still quite likable.
You might think that since good ol' Pete is going to be Hegemon and all, we'd learn a bit more about him. We do, but not nearly enough. We pretty much have to trust Bean's instincts that Peter's bad, but not as bad as Achilles. Peter's actions don't really give us much to go on, and we're still not let in on what he's thinking. That's a bit of a disappointment.
Beyond the personal angle, there's huge, heaping gobs of politics, war, and other fun. Plus we find out a secret about Bean (that, if memory serves, was hinted at but never revealed in Ender's Shadow).
I enjoyed this book, and will most likely end up reading the other two Bean books that Card's got in the works. At the same time, though, I found myself wondering just how long Card can go on writing about Ender and his assorted permutations. That, and I kept getting annoyed at those damn brilliant Battle School kids. Just once, I'd like to see one of them whose instincts weren't perfect, or who wouldn't see the "obvious" (i.e., extremely conspiratorial) thing that was going on, or who was hit in the head and now just sits around and drools. I know they're supposed to be the best of the best, but a flaw other than unfounded self-doubt would be nice here and there.
Overall, it's a good book, but some of the recurring elements are starting to NOT grow on me.

Very different than all the other Ender's books I've read, and it's vaguely surprising to me that I enjoyed it so much because I don't usually like books that delve so much in the political, but I was still captivated enough by the characters that the different focus didn't really bother me.

This was an enjoyable follow-up to Ender's Shadow. I admittedly had a bit of a problem with the main villain -- another battle-school wiz kid. It seemed a bit of a stretch as to how easily he managed to acquire his influence, when the other, more seasoned, "good-guy" wiz kids (e.g. Bean and Peter for starters) had to work hard to achieve their influence despite their more illustrious histories. Other than that minor nit, I found the book to be an enjoyable read, and quite difficult to put down. We know of course (from Ender's Game) that Peter will end up on top, and it is compelling reading as to how he works to achieve this, with Bean's at-times-reluctant help.

As he did with Ender, Card follows Bean's journey as he leaves Battle School. But rather than fast forward to Bean as an adult, the action picks up shortly after the parallel books Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow leave off, and stay grounded in the political conflict on Earth. One of the more interesting decisions, I thought, was to pair Bean's exploits with those of Peter Wiggin, Ender's older brother, who in Ender's Game was an antagonist. But they aren't the only familiar faces. In this book and those that follow, the world's superpowers are desperate to gain the support of all the children from Battle School...with the alien threat removed, countries are back to fighting one another, and it's interesting to see the children come into adulthood in a world that asks them to choose between each other or their countries. Card again balances intense action with difficult moral decisions to craft a book you just can't put down.

I enjoyed the way Card further developed the characters of Bean, Peter, and some of the other battle school students. I had a hard time putting it down. Orson Scott Card continues to be one of my favorite authors ever along with Terry Goodkind.

This sequel to Ender's Shadow dffered from its predecessor in terms of its scale. More like a game of Risk, which may appeal to others, less so to me. However it further develops the character of Bean who learns increasingly the value of the honourable life as opposed to the value of survival for its own sake. Still well worth reading.

The Bean series continues to explore the lives of the children after Battle School, a great story that was sadly left out of the Ender series.

Shadow of the Hegemon continues Bean's story. The buggers have been destroyed and Ender and Valentine are traveling with the colonization program. Ender's fellow child commanders have all returned to their homes on Earth. Achilles escapes and begins his machinations to take over the world and to kill anyone who has ever seen him in a vulnerable position. He kidnaps all of child commanders except for Ender, who is off-planet, and Bean, who managed to elude him. Hearing Bean's perspective on events (like exactly how Peter becomes Hegemon) makes the whole series much deeper and more interesting.

I did find the idea that the meaning of our lives is ties up in the idea that we must reproduce as often as possible annoying. And, as I work in a middle school with a scary rate of teen pregnancy, I would probably not recommend this to my students. The school board doesn't allow us to teach any sex ed, so I'm definitely not going to handicap my students further by encouraging procreation. Yikes!

Predictable story, but good character development. It's slower than Ender's Shadow, but without the engrossing plot of Speaker.

The sequel to Ender's Shadow this book follows the life of Enders group of super geniuses who helped him defeat the "Buggers." The countries of the Earth have now broken into war and the new weapons needed to win these wars are the children from the battle schools but most valuable are those who worked directly with Ender. It is full of political intricacies with many realistic ideas and you can see many connections to what is happening today. This world of turmoil could likely be what our world becomes.
