About half way through. And while I enjoy Morris's style I do admit drifting off course at times for other books. Best of the book I feel is seeing Teddy set against his time - a scene where he has George Washington Carver come to the white house for dinner and the responding newspaper backlash really hit me on how different 1900 was from 2007.Its all here in great detail in a very manageable style.
I also have the first book of this two part bio but happened to start with this one. If the TR presidency is your real interest, pick this one up.

A continued biography of TR by Edmund Morris (part 3 is planned), this volume covers Roosevelt's presidential years, but is for some reason, a bit more drawn out than the first volume (The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt). An intriguing read, none-the-less!

I definitely preferred Rise to this one, but I guess that's mostly because I enjoy reading more of the personal stuff than all the lawmaking...The man was amazing, electrifying, compelling--all of that and then some. No doubt TR himself would have closed this book w/ the same thought: why did he shoot himself in the foot by stating (and then adhering to) not seeking a full 2nd term...I can only wonder what difference that would have made to the USA...
way more bogged down in the minutiae of policy/ deal making than I'm interested in, but overall it's still pretty good...just past the half-way point.

TR is one of my favorite historical figures. I think Morris does a wonderful job of detailing the life of this brilliant American statesman. I have yet to read the final book in the set but the Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex are both highly readable. It also shows a distinct contrast with the president we had at the beginning of this century.

The second part of the Morris triology...Theordore Roosevelt is considered one of our greatest presidents for a reason.....because he was! Highlights include the creation of Panama in order to build the Panama Cannal, Teddy's trust-busting ways and his abilty to broker the end of the Russo-Japanesse war for which he won the Nobel Prize. I can't wait for the movie!

“Theodore Rex” by Edmund Morris is a detailed account of the presidential years of Theodore Roosevelt, but it reads like a popular novel. The action begins with his wild ride from upstate New York to Washington D.C. upon hearing of the assassination of President William McKinley and concludes with TR escorting his reluctant hand-picked successor, William Howard Taft to the Capitol on Inauguration Day 1908. Morris even reveals what dialogue would have taken place between Roosevelt and his contemporaries, giving the reader the sensation of being “a bug on the wall” and able to observe the significant events of the Roosevelt White House. TR was one of the most noteworthy of the 44 men who have held the office of President of the United States of America. Edmund Morris has done us a great service of providing this memoir of a remarkable man who should serve as a role model for us all.

Incredible biography. Favorite biography I've ever read. It's chock full of information and it's also bully fun. Read this biography, I've read several on TR, but this is by far the best.

Another outstanding biography from Morris, but pales slightly in comparison to the masterful "Rise of Theodore Roosevelt". In that volume, I was constantly in awe of what an outstanding American character Roosevelt was. In this book, covering his presidency, he's brought down to earth, struggling with the same challenges every president faces (namely Congress). There's no question TR had truly great accomplishments as president, but the impact doesn't seem to fully come across in this book - at times it's as if he's almost a passive participant in the action around him. Still a great read and worthy followup. I can't wait for the third and final volume coming out in Nov 2010!

Edmund Morris works magic again. This is an inspiring and riveting work; I had trouble putting it down. He shows TR's main strengths (courage, moral vision) side by side with his weakness (power-hunger). Though, when this work ends, that weaknesses has not fully emerged. The focus here is on the strengths.

Easily engaging historical view of TR's presidential years. I gained a deep appreciation for Theodore Roosevelt as the Wilderness Warrior, the pragmatic progressive, the forcefully patient diplomat, and the embodiment of the "strenuous life". Clearly he also had faults, including a disconcerting propensity to use formal governmental institutions to intimidate political enemies along with a desire to accumulate ever more power within the presidency.
This is an excellent book for insight into TR's character, but also the political, social, and economic happenings of the US and other countries (Germany, Japan, Russia, France and Great Britain) at the beginning of the 20th century.

Morris picks up where he left off in "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt", and the reader is thrust into a whirlwind of presidential activity. The political and economic movers and shakers of Early 20th-century America are resurrected, and their blood simultaneously boils in resentment and adoration of TR. Reading this biographical sequel, one can't help but come to the conclusion that Teddy Roosevelt was the most capable, and sometimes least likely, man to lead America to greatness at the dawn of the 20th century. This is a truly remarkable biography, and left me longing for a third part to tell the rest of Teddy's story.

One of the most intense, fair and balanced books that I have read on a President, sitting or not, Democrat or Republican Should anyone care to read about one of this countries most prolific leaders, intelligent individual and egocentric ambitious young men, then this is a must have.
One of the most comprehensive looks at any President that I have ever read. Truly worth the time to read this book and found out what made this man tick.

Wonderfully written. Great picture of both the man and the times. What a fascinating person T-Rex was, would have loved to hear him speak. Didn't realize how much we owe him for our nation's amazing parks & monuments like the Grand Canyon.

Edmund Morris great book, Theodore Rex is the sequel to The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. This one begins where he becomes president after the McKinley assassination and takes you all the way through that term and his subsequent re-election in 1904.

It reads more like a novel than a dry historical account, making it more enjoyable.

At times it seems Roosevelt was a natural-born politician. He ended the Russo-Japanese War, managed to stave off several others by brokering agreements between nations ready to fight.

He is responsible for 18 National Monuments, 5 National Parks (including the Grand Canyon), the Panama Canal (which almost ended up not being in Panama!) and held one of the first conferences to promote and discuss conservation.

This book takes you through how he did all this and more, showing how he dealt with allies and adversaries.

His enormous popularity among the people he served(many wanted him to run for another term in 1908) is a testament to how he looked out for the "little guy" unlike today's political system.

Lengthy, due to the many details and excerpts from his writings and the writings of others.

A great read! A must for any American history buff!
