An absolutely harrowing premise and smouldering, beautiful writing. Unfortunately by the end the complexity of the book is sacrificed to a simplistic cause-and-effect psychological equation, which disappoints. Still, it's worth reading--Harrison is one of the torchbearers of the contemporary female Gothic tradition, and she explores territory a lesser writer would shy away from.
