Poverty at it's worst. Vivid characterizations. Great dialogue. Sad story told with gritty indifference.

It was a classic in its day, but I can only think that's because many readers didn't know better.

I found it mean-spirited and pointless. It had none of the subtle sympathy for the humanity of the left-behind of Twain's "Huck Finn" or Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath", for example, and none of the indignation and sense of purpose of Sinclair's "The Jungle."

Tobacco Road exposes you to the gritty life of sharecroppers in Depression-era Georgia. Once again Caldwell uses his simple, flowing prose to explain the degradation, hardships, and day-to-day struggles experienced by the lower rungs of rural society during his time on earth.

Un roman qui désarçonne : faut-il en rire ou en pleurer ? Drame ou farce ? Auscultation sans états d'âme de cette marionnette grotesque appelée "homme". Superbe.

Found this book in an abandoned house my family bought. It was a first-copy publish and was old, so I thought it would be great. It was something all right. However, it is one of the most creepy books I have ever read. It left you with a feeling that to this day no book ever has. And the sad thing is...it's not intended to be that creepy! Nonetheless, it was a book I rather enjoyed.

Tobacco Road is set in the southern US after the Great Depression, and as such we are met with some very deplorable characters living in utter destitution, that can barely seem to scrape by. There is no doubt that Caldwell was intending to be satirical when shaping these wretched misfits, as the humour and ridiculous exaggeration is not subtle, and if you can wrap your mind around this fact you may find yourself laughing out loud throughout. Every single character will no doubt make your skin crawl, and you may be tempted to bang your head against a brick wall with their unbelievable actions and asinine commentary. In order to elicit such disgust and revolt from an audience, there is no disputing that Caldwell was adept at his craft.

This book is probably not for everyone, but if you are going to give it a shot, don't take it too seriously. I was able to find some clips on YouTube from the black and white movie of the same name, directed by John Ford, and had a real laugh.

Really a great book even though it might lack some of the refinements of "fine" literature. The narrative can be sometimes repetitious, but there is some purpose to that. It provides an interesting read that can be paradoxically humorous and sad. The story does accurately depict the effects of industrialization on the rural American South. For those who take interest in Southern Literature, and who know the context behind the story, it should be an interesting read.

An interesting story, with subject matter that seems racey for it's times. The ignorant behavior of most of the characters was often humerous but also shocking, infuriating and down right messed up.

This son of a southern preacher wrote of the people he knew and his father pastored.

This book is really a retelling of PROVERBS. Read both and you'll know what I mean.

Really a work of genius.

Listen to this Book on tape - the voices given to the Lesters and Preacher Bessie enhance the story. The treatment of women will make you cringe.
A lot of poverty is systemic, but as this story shows: roots of poverty in dumb ass choices.
