If you're into the monastic life, or a student of history, then you should read this book. Thankfully, most of us have moved beyond this type of expression of piety. Not particularly entertaining, repetitive, but nonetheless and important work to be read for a complete understanding of Christian history.

Want to read one of Europes formative and most influential texts? Here it is. This is a nice English translation of Benedict's little rule for monks, released to celebrate 1500 years since his birth. Benedicts Rule comes in 73 chapters, written over many years and drawing upon his own experience as "abba" of a monastery and a life lived following God's will, as revealed to Benedict through the sacred scripture. The Prologue describes the impetus of a life given to following Christ. The first seven chapters set out the most important identities: of an Abbot, of a monk, how community decisions should be made and what the central characteristics of a monastic life are: obedience, humility, silence. In all, each chapter foresees some particular question concerning an aspect of life, work and prayer together and sets out criteria for dealing with it.
