This one's a bit academic, but not too much. It makes some interesting connections that were enjoyable to read. I loved Hyde's translation of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes included as an appendix.

Tricksters are the masters of everything on the periphery of civilization. They dwell in all places "in between." But this book makes the argument that Tricksters are necessary for shaking things up and causing human institutions to change for the better.

In this book Hyde examines the Trickster archetype, the "archetype that attacks all archetypes." He juxtaposes myths that involve the classic tricksters with more contemporary artists and examines the fact that tricksters are really the ones who move the world along by challenging the established ideas of truth and power and, thus, opening paths to new worlds.
