Though some of Descartes' ideas were quite interesting, and even more intriguing to have a discussion over, the language and style of writing, being from so long ago, made it a little difficult to just jump right in to. A good read none the less and one I would recommend.

dude, alex. Be thankful for rene. he's a good man. Try reading stuff by Heidegger or Sartre or Derrida. If rene was high, those people must have been on an industrial solvent that took away their capacity to say something brief and clear. your fellow ireader of fine philosophy, Spencer

Descartes has a very refreshing perspective that once grasped offers a sense of peace and relief. An analogy might be just prior to execution you receive a repreive from the Govenor.

I had to read this book at least 3 times as an undergrad and, I must confess, this is one of my favorite philosophical texts. Yes, the arguments that Descartes present seem a bit "odd" but the beauty of his analysis is that he is breaking everything down to its simplest form in order to determine the answer to the most controversial metaphysical questions. To this day, the arguments that Descartes presents are fundamental to the study of metaphysics and modern philosophy. Any student of the classics who is not exposed to this monumental text must get a hold of it immediately.

I read a Project Gutenberg translation from 1649. Painful archaic English, but the clarity of thought comes through.

This is one of those extremely important books on the history of ideas. Since the first time I read it I may have been to young (grade 10), I'm glad I had the "opportunity" to revisit it in University
