 Pure genius!

Words do no justice to this book. For a bloke that's written over 400 books, this is certainly one of this best and most applicable to our daily lives. It would be nice if our leaders used some of the gems that are contained in this book.

A MUST read for any student of philosophy or anyone interested in ethics. A practical guide to a virtuous and happy life!

5 stars - my co-favourite book after Plato's Republic.

What is the purpose of life? Aristotle addressed a subject no smaller in the Nicomachean Ethics. From love to friendship to pleasure, Aristotle, pro-Life in the broadest, most general sense, affirmed the nobility of man.

Unlike existentialists and behaviorists, Aristotle did not believe man was structurally a blank slate. Man has a functional nature; certain acts go with the grain of reality, while other acts go against it -- good is always good-for-something, such as health, wealth, or victory. The nature of humanity ultimately aims at what translates as happiness, flourishing, blessedness, and excellence.

Human hardware needs a proper operating system to run effectively; this does not come with the initial purchase. We require training and indoctrination to avoid excesses and deficiencies; we learn through punishments and remedies. Aristotle analyzed the moral virtues, including courage, temperance, liberality, magnificence, ambition, magnanimity, gentleness, friendliness, truthfulness, and wit. The ancients believed emotions can be right and wrong.

Aristotelian Man is not a slave to the passions. Reason is our active ordering faculty-- the corresponding intellectual virtues include insight, common sense, technique, prudence and wisdom. Morality becomes a performance, a display-- the is no Freudian "real me" in Aristotle's philosophy outside of our actions.

Evil in this context falls under three categories: vice, incontinence, and brutality. In addition, injustice can be understood as an imbalance with respect to parts and wholes, concerning both merit and corrections.

Aristotle had an un-Christian contempt for perversity, wretchedness, and despair-- only the vicious attempt to escape from themselves. Aristotle found a divine element in human reason, placing contemplation as the highest good-- the life of the Gods is blessed. The moral of the story: being human is noble, so one might as well act the part.

this rating reflects the text itself much more than christopher biffle's slightly obnoxious commentary...i very much enjoyed this text and generally agreed with aristotle's ethical views, most notably the mean, excess, and deficiency that define vice and virtue. i did not necessarily agree with his view of the "great-souled" man, nor did i enjoy his slight aristocratic bias, but overall aristotle's thought is both brilliant and insightful. for only being aristotle's lecture notes (as of now no copies of the actual ethics text have been found), this was also written very coherently, although slightly complex and circular at times.
