Same here... I don't generally like poetry at all, but I love Blake.

Brilliant- a masterpiece. Blakes work is full of ambiguity. The poems in Songs of Innocence are from a child-like perspective whose inexperience allows a more romantic, optimistic and slightly naïve view of the world. In Songs of Experience the world is a more complex place. The outlook is much more jaded, more questioning and cynical. William Blake subtitled Songs of Innocence and of Experience, ‘Shewing the Two Contrary states of the Human Soul’ and the two conflicting perspectives of innocence and experience give the reader an insight into these ‘states’. Prophetic mastery!!

Showing the two contrary states of human nature. Songs of Innocence celebrates the joy of innocence and Songs of Experience depicts the loss of innocence caused by the exposure to the material world and mortal sins.

To me the beauty of Blake's poetry is in its metrical and rhetorical simplicity. Rather than compose verses rich in allegory and made with complex structure like the generation before him had done, Blake wrote simple, beautiful lyrics which have even been set to music by a wide range of artists through the years, such is the melodious quality of his writing. Added to the power of his words, the striking visions to be found in the artwork with which he illustrated his poems are vivid and intense.

'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' is a defining collection, and its production marks a watershed in the progression of English literature into the Romantic Age. It is a work of art in the truest meaning of the phrase.

One of the few books which I read in high school and which had a lasting impression on me. Thus far, this is the ONLY book of poetry that I would list amongst my all-time literary favourites. As you read it, you will have many 'aha' moments as you find the source for many popular citations.

While he didn't date his prints, this is pretty clearly a copy of a later printing of Blake's most popular work. Certainly lacks a lot of the detail found in earlier printings, but the shifts in coloring and emphasis tell you a lot about Blake's own artistic development.
For a super-fun time compare the printing in this book to that in the excellent "Complete Illuminated Works." Nuts.
