Richard Wurmbrand is one of my all-time heros. Former atheist, now intellectual believer, spent 13 years in Communist prisons for his faith. Taught me how to overcome evil with good and how love conquers hatred. Extremely smart man, prolific writer, lived out his Christianity through persecutions and then in the prosperous West organized to relieve the sufferings of the persecuted and to love the Communists and Muslim persecutors by intellectually confronting their warped ideology with the love of Christ as well as logic and reason.

A very sobering autobiography of the founder of the Voice of the Martyrs, Richard Wurmbrand. He was imprisoned for 14 years in Communist-controlled Romania where he was isolated, and tortured beyond belief. His story is one that he prays will open the sleeping eyes of the West to the injustices and evils committed by communism (and other evil systems) against Christians all around the world. This is a sort of "call to arms" without advocating any physical weaponry. Instead the weapons we ought to fight with are the Word of God and prayer. But, we can't neglect using either, and we certainly can't neglect the war. To sit on the sidelines and do nothing about the world's injustices can perhaps be compared to being an actual accomplice to the evil actions themselves. For whether we actively engage in evil or sit still and allow it, evil still rages on (What's the difference between doing either of these actions if evil continues??). To understand more fully the reality of Christian suffering in this world, I urge you to read this book. May the Holy Spirit use its pages to grip the reader to do something for the sake of the Gospel and God's people in persecuted places...

A sobering work describing the author's experiences in Communist prison for preaching Christ. A call for encouragement for those who suffer for their faith.

Richard Wurmbrand, in 1967, wrote this book telling of the suffering and triumph of the "Underground Church" in Romania and Russia and other parts of the world. In spite of more freedoms in some of these parts, he makes it clear that the freedom, in most cases, is still a show. He started "Voice of the Martyrs" to tell the story that still goes on today. The underground church needs the help and prayers of the free church. When one part of the body suffers all parts suffer.

Richard Wurmbrand said of this book. "it is of no literary value." I disagree, but the content is well worth the time to read. He doesn't as much tell his story, but the story of the faithful underground church. If you are a Christian, this is well worth your time to read.
