Interesting. Layered. Not what I expected.

Commendable for a first novel. Highly imaginative, almost stream-of-consciousness writing. Found it somewhat hard to follow at times, however. I think this novel would have resonated more with me when I was young and stupid like the characters in the story.

Lai's book was one with so much more potential. The unique story strands which are marked by the symbols of either the fox, poetess or Artemis and are swirled together started off in a promising manner. She brings up a number of different issues; gender, sexuality, belonging to name a few and has chosen some fascinating settings to observe them. However, while it was promising, nothing is really dealt with: things are fleetingly brought up and then discarded. Characters who provide nothing are brought up and lost. Things which might have injected life into the narrative are quickly forgotten. It's unfortunate more than anything and while Lai deserves credit for laying the groundwork for something that is very attractive she fails to take advantage of it leaving the reader unsatisfied.
